I even recently saw on the discovery channel an idea that uses magnets for brakes so there would be no friction, somthing like that would work perfectly to generate more power when using the brake.

Hey dummy, go read - most of the electric cars on the market now or in the past used electric braking to partially recharge the batteries. And you don't use magnets for braking and get any energy out, you have to have a motor operating as a generator.

its not a magnet, its an electric motor acting as a generator. Simple concept, motion of a mass is caused by a drive motor. Energy from the motor is transfered to the mass and the mass gains Kinetic Energy given by equation
K.E = 0.5 m(v)^2. where m = mass and v = speed
when a car brakes, the power control unit on the car senses this and the reverses the motor, which becomes a generator through which this K.E is transferred back into the battery.
You can't get out more energy than you put in so the braking method saves power but doesn't generate more power.
the hybrid cars use this technology. so its already been done.

It actually *is* used and has been around for 10+ years.

Keep in mind that it is faster to brake to a stop than it is to reach the cruising speed. The problem with reclaiming the energy during braking is that there is a limit the amount of charge that can go into the batteries in a given period of time--they simply can't absorb the energy fast enough.

This is not a new idea. Trains which run a diesel to turn a generator to power the electric motors that make a train go have used regenerative braking for years. Can't believe everything you see on TV.

Actually, the friction from brakes is used now to charge the battery in a hybrid. I don't really understand what you are talking about.

man it was invented way back, braking power is used tocharge batteries.
