The record for unwanted dogs euthanized in shelters is currently a pretty close tie between labs, pits and beagles, and mixes thereof. I read just recently that for every 100 pits in shelters, 8 will get adopted and 92 will be killed. That is sad!

Most known breeds are over bred but especially when there is a surge in popularity in a certain breed. Right now it's the toy breeds like all the celebs are carrying around. When 101 Dalmatians came out Dals were getting over bred. But for the most part canines have been a part of our history for so long every breed is or at one time over bred. The best breed in the whole world is by far the very numerous shelter dog sometimes referred to a a rescue dog. Help stop the overpopulation in shelters and adopt your pet.

We need to educate people about back yard breeders, spaying and neutering, and animal shelters. Any popular dog breed is over bred. This include labs, golden retriever, german shepherd, pit bulls, chihuahuas....
Back yard breeders continue to breed these dogs because there is a market for them. People will buy their puppies. When people are looking for a puppy, they often times don't even think to look at their local animal shelter. They just open the news paper or get online to find the breed they want for the cheapest price. They don't know what to look for in a reputable breeder, and even if they did, a lot of them just want a pup for $200.
People need to be educated on the pet overpopulation. When people are looking for a puppy or dog, it is important to remind them that they can almost ALWAYS find the breed they are looking for in their local animal shelter. We need to educate people on why it is so important to get their pet spayed or neutered if they are not a reputable breeder. Maybe if people knew how many pets were being euthanized every day due to over population they would reconsider breeding their pet. And if they knew about the health benefits of spaying and neutering, maybe they would consider getting their pet fixed.

Many breeds are overbred- sometimes accidental breedings from dogs that haven't been spayed or neutered, other times by amateur breeders looking to make a quick buck.
Dogs found in online searches can also come from puppy mills.
I don't really think one breed can be singled out as "overbred". My suggestion, if you are looking for a puppy to own, would be to go to your local shelter and adopt.

Where you were looking, it might be the shih-tzu.
In the UK, the staffordshire bull terrier is the one most commonly found breed in pounds at the moment.
A few years ago, the dalmatian (coincided with the launch of a film) was massively overbred.
Breeds become fashionable and are bred excessively by people who don't test for health or temperament. They are sold to anyone who turns up with the cash regardless of the suitability of that home.
Then they have problems with health and temperament and all of a sudden there's a problem with the dog, and by association - the breed.

Oh,gosh, that is a hard one,but I would say that the top ten right now are:
Golden Retrievers
Labrador Retrievers
Chihuahuas
Shih Tzus
Yorkshire Terriers
German Shepherds
Maltese
Poodles
Miniature Pinschers
Lhasa Apsos
And then you have all of those "designer dogs" aka mutts. Most popular breeds are over bred, these are just the one that I see the most of in my area. Also,as Jennifer T says, pitbulls and beagles are right up there, too.I see tons of beagles on Petfinder.Such a wonderful little dog,and so many just thrown away.Pity.

They keep breeding them because they want money. They don't care if there are a lot of Shih Tzus or any other breed in shelters. They just consider them a way to make money. Like you said, if you look on petfinder.com, there are tons of Shih Tzus who need a home- and they certainly don't cost $2,500. What a rip off!

Really, the most over bred dog is the labrador. You can walk into any shelter across the country and find dozens of lab & lab mixes....they are truely a dime a dozen.
People breed dogs for different reasons. You got your responsible breeders who want to better a breed. Then you got your back yard breeders who want to make a buck, or want their kids to "see the miricle of birth", or too lazy to have their dog fixed...etc. Then you got puppymills who pump them out by the tons with little to no regard for any of the animals, which live in terrible conditions putting it nicely. You even got your hoarders who don't intentionally breed, but start out trying to "save" dogs & cats only to find they are overwhelmed when the animals start breeding, then a few cats or dogs become literal hundreds in a home, you can only imagine the living cond. for both man & beast in a situation like that.

because there's not money to be made in shelters. or backyard breeders and puppy mill owners would start a shelter. they go where the money is. any dog that is bred just once and isn't a champion anything without proper genetic and temperment tests is being overbred.

Without actually researching it I would say labs and goldens although all dogs are overbred. Those two are the 'peoples favorites' along with the plucky little beagles.
