Keep in mind the fact that the dj also pretty much coordinates the entire reception and ensures that certain things get done when they need to. They make all the announcements about eating, bridal party songs, garter, bouquet toss, cake....you name it. Do you really want to be the one in charge to be sure all tasks are executed in a timely manner? Personally, I'd rather leave that to someone else (a professional. Not a friend or family member).

I was so worried about having a cheesy DJ at my wedding that I decided to make my own CDs of all the music - ceremony, dinner, reception, bouquet toss - you name it. I rented speakers for the reception and they didn't work!!! Fortunately I had a very large, nice boom box with great speakers. It ended up working perfectly well.
A couple items of note - make several copies as back-ups and give them to different people to bring along. The song that my husband and I were supposed to walk into the reception ("our song") the disc wouldn't work and the person in charge of playing the CDs had to scramble and find something else to play. It was probably the one thing about my wedding that I would go back and change.
I've heard of people downloading all the music on to an iPod or MP3 player and then having the device fail on them. I know it's a little "old school" but just burn CDs. CDs are cheap and you can burn 3 or 4 copies of your first dance. If one fails you still have plenty of back up.
Personally I'm so glad I had my own music. I was able to make sure no "yucky" songs were played and I was able to ensure that all the important songs to my husband and I got played.
Find someone who has a really nice - big boombox with good quality speakers and you should be fine. Just remember the powercords, possibly batteries for an outdoor wedding, and extension cords, etc. A lot even have a place to plug in a microphone for the toasts, etc.
Best wishes!

We are hiring a Juke box. We found that a DJ would be way to expensive for the wedding we were having and though that a juke box would be better suited to us and at 10% of the price a dj would have cost

a better bet is to use an ipod and pump it thru speakers from a radio or boom box. just use an fm adaptor.
you can make a play list of your fave songs and put them in what ever order you want.
or just hit shuffle and go to town.

i think that since your wedding is going to be more intimate, it would be totally fine to just have a nice cd player...i mean, as long as it is loud enough, you should be fine, and it doesn't have to be out for show. the cd idea is great, most wedding djs are super cheesy!

hook up an ipod to a docking station. If they have speakers there you can connect it to them too. Then you can have your own playlist.
