I don't use/have radio telemetry and have tried a bell but would like my dog to bark on trail any advice? I hunt the pacific northwest with lots of timber and mountains for ever and ever.

It's my opinion that sort of trait is just part of the dogs personality and you can't train it out of them. My suggestion would be to run him with a more vocal dog.

If you know the area you hunt and i mean really know it ( including where the den trees are ) you will be able to judge with some degree of acuracy which direction the coon will go. That is, if the dog barks on the start of a hot trail. If it does, you are still ok and in many cases the dog will tree a coon before it gets to a den tree by sheer surprise.

If you do not hear him bark on finding a trail or if you are unfamiliar with the area to this degree as was prior mentioned it would be best to run him with a trail barker.
I used a still trailer many years ago to much success but i was born and raised in the area and knew it well even at night.
both a still trailer and a barker have distint advantages and i believe it is all predicated by your own ability and familiarity of the hunt area
if he does not bark on trail it is by his own choice and there is not much hope of changing that.

Id say the first answerer is right. It probly cannot be trained to bark, and running him with a dog that does bark might help some.

Put a clothepin on his noogies and I bet he will change his vocal habits......

This is a joke, this is only a joke, had this been anything other than a joke you would have been notified by local authorities on the exacting procedures to be taken. Remember, this is only a joke.

You did not mention how old your dog was, I believe it will open up vocally on its own when its ready*...Its a natural instinct and will happen*...
