I was in the Petland store this afternoon with my boyfriend. We saw a VERY small chihuahua puppy in a display with two other dogs (one larger chihuahua puppy and another small-breed dog). The small puppy was being trampled on and run into by the other two, larger, more boistrous puppies. I said something to the manager, who told me he would be fine, he just had to get used to it. Ok. We went and checked on him again a few minutes later. He was trying to walk across the enclosure, and his tiny feets were falling in between the wire grate. I was concerned that he would either fall over and break his legs or have one of the other rowdy puppies run into him and snap his leg in the grate. My boyfriend said something to the manager again, who told us he would be fine, he'd just have to get used to it. I asked how old he was, he said 8 weeks, and so were the other puppies. He really looked younger than that. I didn't feel right about this. Is this legal, if not, is there anything I can do??

Oops, I didn't mean to ask this twice (my computer froze earlier and I didn't realize it posted).

But thanks for the additional answers!

. It's stupid and that managers a Jackass But its their dog, .If you have an aspca or humane society they might educate the store on proper confinement of young puppies. Thats one reason you should buy from a reputable breeder, and not a store where they don't know and don't give a crap about the animals in their care.

You can call your local animal control and talk to them about it. But I really doubt they will do anything. I wish they would just investigate every pet store that sells puppies and find out where these puppies came from. But I would still try to contact animal control anyways. Hopefully they will talk to this pet store, and at least make them put the puppy in a more adequate enclosure, like in a cage either with smaller puppies, or by himself. And they should Not be keeping puppies in a cage that has a wire bottom. You are right that that puppy could get his leg caught and break his leg. I hope Animal Control does something...

it's a petstore. this is why you don't get dogs from petstores. the only thing you can do is call your local animal control. if they find the openings in the grate to be too big for him to safely be on they can make the petstore put him in a smaller cage. also i would call every day. this is not the only manager. ask for their general managers contact info. ask for corporate numbers. they must give them to you. you can call the corporate offices and try to get something done through them. sometimes if it's as simple as putting the puppy in a smaller cage it can be accomplished. as for bigger things like selling a too small chihuahua, who's probably not in great health, there's not much that can be done. that's up to the buyer of this pup. and sadly someone will get this pup. and will either not be able to handle the problems the pup has and surrender it over to a rescue, or they will just deal with the poor temperment and medical issues. either way that pup will be replaced by at least 2 more puppies from either the same or a different crappy breeder whose just in it for the money. it's a horrible cycle. at least you see there's something wrong with how petstores handle their pups. they don't care. that's just money sitting in that cage. no matter how he looks someone will buy him. and until then they will do the bare minimum. good for you for at least trying. and good luck trying to get something done.

that's weird and wonderful, whilst i replaced into at Petland (in Northern Illinois) I observed an identical ingredient. I saved traumatic that the Chihuahua's leg replaced into going to get broken by using fact it saved slipping in the process the grate it replaced into status on and getting plowed into by using a extra physically powerful Pomeranian domestic dog. the employees weren't worried there the two. that's relatively unhappy by using fact there replaced into yet another little Pomeranian on demonstrate for awhile and then it replaced into lacking. whilst it replaced into back to the sales floor final week between the employees instructed me it wasn't on demonstrate by using fact it had a broken leg! I completely agree that this undertaking is carefully incorrect, yet truly the only ingredient it is going to stop that's if human beings stop determining to purchase puppy save domestic dogs! (I in basic terms flow there to purchase canines nutrition)

you asked this question 2 hours ago.. alot of people gave you good advice. Call your local animal control/dog warden/ ASPCA (whatever agency in your area is in charge of investigating animal cruelty)

Contact your local USDA inspector and have them inspect the store.
