A rescued one.
Don't pick the dog, let the dog pick you. Have general guildlines for a dog you would be interested for example size, fur (long short ect.) gender ect. Get to know the animals at your local shelter. The right one for you will stand out. If an animal doesnt stand out instantly wait, or continue your search at another shelter.
I have noticed rescued animals tend to provide a bond unlike any other. It is like they truly appreciate being rescued, and know they have.

The funny thing is that almost all dogs are great companions. Every dog is different, though, so when you're picking one out, you'll have to look for the characteristics you want in an companion. The dog you pick will be different if you are an avid hiker than if you mostly stay at home and don't go out much. Think about what you want in a dog, such as if you want a large or small dog, one that has lots of fur, one that is very active, etc. You can find tons of cute dogs on petfinder.com. I'd look there first, because you are bound to find at least one you'll really like. Good luck! P.S.- My favorite dogs are beagles and dachshunds. I think they make excellent pets. Look into them!

Depends on how much "energy" you have! If you want a big dog, you will have to walk a lot at least 3 times a day. So in that case, I would recommend a Labrador. If you want a little dog that might be more of a pleasure inside the house, and is easier to walk with, I would recommend a nice fluffy Bichon Frise.

Are you referring to Canine Companions for Independence, the assistance dogs? They are often labrador or golden retrievers, although many breeds can be trained to be an assistance dog.

It's impossible to say . We all have different traits we like in dogs.If I tell you Golden Retriever, and he's too big for your needs then it's not best is it? I've had dogs that other people would hate and they were perfect for me. Decide on size, then temperament. how much exersize can you give a dog, the variables are up to you. Check the AKC web site for some background info on dogs. That will help you start your search.

That depends a lot on the temperment of the person to whom it will be a companion. The very best dog to be your companion may be entirely unsuitable for me.
