I want to socialize my puppy, but where are some places I can take him besides the obvious (parks, etc.). Do banks, etc. usually allow pets inside?

Most businesses (especially food-related ones) do not allow animals other than service dogs in their establishments.

Take him to Petsmart, Petco or other pet supply stores where pets are allowed. You don't need to buy anything, just look around and let your puppy have fun meeting new people and other dogs.

When we first got our puppy my husband was still in graduate school and I would often take the puppy with me and walk through campus while we waited for my husband. A lot of students would come up and ask to pet or play with her b/c they missed their dogs back at home.

Also try taking your dog into a "downtown" type area (if it is safe... I don't know where you live) and walk around. You could also take him to a playground to get him used to being around little kids. I did this a few times, and it seemed to work out well... one word of warning, moms or babysitters will probably question why you are there. Strange adult with a cute puppy and no kids may make others think you are some kind of perv or kidnapper.

First ok it with your vet as it is best to have your puppy completely vaccinated before risking exposure. But some non obvious places are an outdoor mall, some stores may let you bring the pup in, ask first. And the best place for socializing is puppy class. Usually there is a free time at the end of each class where the pups get to run around playing with each other and other owners. And there's the added bene of your dog learning some obedience.

I don't know where you live, but in our local paper here there is a special section dedicated to pets. They usually list all upcoming fairs and pet centered activities. I usually take my girl to every county fair and park gathering that they will let us in at. In addition to PetSmart and PetCo, if you have any feed stores in your area, they are usually pretty good about letting you bring your pup in, just bring stuff to clean up after him with. If you have any outlet malls/shopping centers in your area, I used to hang out there as well, since they are mostly outdoors and people always want to stop and pet the puppy. Plus I did, like someone suggested, and got her certified as a therapy dog and now we can go to nursing homes and such.

most pet shops allow dogs. I took my dog into Home Depot last week. I have also taken him into other hardware stores and video stores without any problems.

Any place that sells or serves food will not allow a dog.. its a health code.

Any other place, its up to the owner's discretion. At worse, you would just be asked to leave.

See if you can do some therapy work with your pup too.. you can socialize your pup, and bring some joy to elderly and disabled at the same time.

Group training classes are another good socialization oppourtunity.

Provided that he is potty trained by now and has had all of his Parvo shots, most home improvement stores (such as Lowes & Home Depot) will allow your dog in. Banks usually will not and neither will places serving food. Petsmart does allow you to bring your pet in to shop and there are also many restaurants with patio dining that allow you to bring your dog, provided that you do not have to walk through the restaurant to get to the patio. Be sure to check with them first though.

Banks allow pets if there small enough. You can bring small dogs into supermarkets they fit in the cart. Many people don't mind seeing how they are small and really unnoticable.. At the bank we do sometimes carry him in a bag or just carry him ourselves.Petco and petsmart allow pets, and pet stores...

No most only allow service dogs to go inside. Take him to your favorite pet store, not Walmart, The ones around my town don't mind if they are not a pooper.

Petsmart allows pets. You could take the dog to obedience training...that often allows them to get used to other people and dogs. n

I take mine to outside eateries, some home improvement warehouses, nurseries, street farmer's markets, etc.

Banks have never told me to get my dog out, nor has my pharmacy, or the little "junket" stores, but then again, they know me...and my rotts.

well if you are getting a puppy or you have on already and it on it months still and its small don't take it know were to another people's house's let them come over. you could take it around your back yard but watch it in your back yard or around your house or walk it back and forth in front of your house around the block were there are no dogs there. Or take it to petco and walk around .
