I would LOVE to learn to play either the guitar or drums, because I'm such a big alternative music fan. <3 It's my life, basicly, considering I don't like sports, or any other extracurricular activities other than writing.
But I don't know which to learn! You see, there are bad sides and good sides to each.
Bad Sides:
Guitar: My older sister is learning guitar, and if she hears that I'm playing the guitar, she'll call me a copycat, but I love being my own person. It's what I'm recognized for in my class.
Drums: I'm not sure if I've got the rhythm. Is it something your born with? Or can I learn? And my friend wants to make a band with me, once i learn guitar or drums, but the person on the drums is rarely noticed. + Noise.
Good Sides:
Guitar: The guitar is amazingly popular, and it's a one person instrument that sounds great on it's own.
Drums: I'll be doing my own thing, and drums aren't so popular, so that makes me even more independent. Plus, they just look so COOL!

Wow, where to start? Look, there are plenty of reasons to learn an instrument. One important consideration is natural ability. I play both guitar and drums. I have a natural ability to play both. I do not play keyboards or wind instruments (just a little harmonica) because they are much more difficult for me.
Without actually sitting down and testing you, it is hard to evaluate where your strength lies. Drums are much easier to learn if you have a good sense of rhythm and good coordination. While the same can be said for many instruments, it is more so for the drummer. You also need to be very dedicated to practicing the drums which is not like other instruments since you will be working on mastering basic rudiments and not producing melodies.
The drum kit is also much more cumbersome than a guitar. You need a place to keep them where you can make noise.
Although at first all you need is a practice pad and some sticks.

Okay, the obvious answer that you were probably expecting is: Do both! I've been playing both since I was 10 and I'm loving all of it.
except your DEAD ON about the not getting noticed part
I drum in two bands, and i try and try to be a noticed figure but it never happens. The drums are such a crutial part of the band, the battery, but no. People would rather hear a waling guit solo that any idiot could write.
Anyways I play both equally as well as each other and they both pay off to each other. All aspects i know in guitar I can use in drums and vise versa.
as far as being born with rythem or not, I have no idea if you can learn it. I was born with it. .. i mean im not egotistical but yeah thats why I dont know. good luck though!

Go for guitar it's more rewarding then drums drums is in the back a lot of people I know have changed drums to either singing bass or guitar because it's no fun being in the back take a few lessons and if you like it go for I think you should try both though. See if you have rythm if you can keep a steady beat then try guitar if you can keep a steady riff going sit down and decide if you don't have rythym for drums but are dedicated and want to be ready to be practicing 3-5 hours a day some people learn drums and guitar faster cause they were born with rythym that doesn't mean you can't play you'll just have to work for it.
Go for which one you want more I suggest guitar though.

well what you should do is play drums, i'm a drummer and let me tell ya' its supper cool! :D its not true that guitarists are a dime a dozen unless your including bad guitarists then yeah i guess it does get ridiculous. drumming helps you learn coordination, makes you use different areas of your brain, and you're given alot of room for improvising. i started out playing drums and moved to guitar and i am a lot more comfortable doing improve than other musicians i know that may have been playing an instrument like the guitar for years. ( its early in the morning and thats why these sentences are so horrible) that jazz beat is a little hard to master but once you get it down its most everything comes together. drums can be played with most music and to quote a friend, "you can serenade with a guitar but when you get in the bed its that jungle beat that really gets you going." so drums are a very good starting instrument. when your purchasing your set make sure you get a drum set that includes hardware, ludwig, pearl, tama, and yamaha make good entry level kits.

Being a drummer myself, i would say go with drums. People can pick up on having the rhythm right away, but it can be learned by practicing with a metronome (which i reccomend no matter what instrument you play).
Noise is the biggest issue with drumming, because it may annoy other people in the house. You should put a lot of thought into it, and find out what you REALLY want to do, and then go with that.

If you have the choice I would blatantly go for drums...here's why...
Drummers are sought after- everyone plays the damn guitar and when it comes to getting a band together the guitarists are easy to find, in fact sometimes there are too many. If you are a good drummer you will be in a good band (maybe two) and being a girl drummer is also a great gimmick :)
By the way, I am not a drummer but I am a guitarist in a band and guitar is overrated. Songs need rhythm!
Oh I do hope you pick drums :)

I wanted to learn how to play guitar, too. It wasn't easy. My advice, open up a yellow pages book. And look for guitar, or
look for a music store and find someone. Good luck!

Nobody cares about drummers. Guitarists and lead singers get all the women.
