If the state you got the ticket in is part of the "NRVC" Non Resident Violators Compact with other states, then that state will send the information to the state you have your drivers license in and they will suspend your license until you pay for the ticket.
Then if you get stopped and your license is suspended you can go to jail, then you have to post a bond, pay fines and cost, pay the fees to get your vehicle out of impound etc. It is so much cheaper to just pay the ticket.

Before computers, nothing until you went back to that state. With computers, your license will be suspended (or not issued) in the state you are in. If you are pulled over still using the suspended license it will show up when they run it through the computer and you will get a ticket for driving on suspended along with a ticket for whatever they pulled you over for. If the court sends your ticket to collections (most do now) there will be a fee added of between 20 and 50% of the original fine and it will begin gaining interest. They may garnish your employment wages or bank funds (from any account you are a signer on, even if someone elses money is in there too) and charge you for the court filing costs to do that, raising your total balance to about 75% more than the original ticket. It will also be placed on your credit report. Only two agencies will report it as a collection, all three will report it as a judgement (public record) if wage or bank garnishment took place.

Some States have an information share process set up with other states, and if the state you live in shares info with the State you received the ticket in, then you can get in trouble.
Do you want to chance that?
I say you call the phone number on your ticket and plead stupidity and offer to make payment arrangements.

All states now are linked to each others dmv database, so you can pay now, or pay dearly down the road. When you renew your driver's license or car tags, your name will be flagged, and you will not get these items until you pay all your fines plus penalties.
