She managed to crawl out of the top of her cage the first time, the other times she's gnawed on the plastic tubes she squeezes through. She also chews on the bars to the door of the cage after she's been let out for a little. Is she just enjoying the taste of freedom and wanting to wander again, or am I missing something else?

Hamsters live to escape. It's not personal, it's just who they are. Make sure that her cage is secure and double-check it every night before you go to bed.

WOW! Sounds like you have a little escape artist on your hands.
She might be constantly chewing on her cage for many reasons:
Boredom- Does she have chew sticks in her cage? When I had my dwarf hammies they would go through chew sticks VERY fast. It did keep them occupied. You can find these at your local pet store for very cheep.
Wheel- Yeah Im sure you know that hamsters are nocturnal creatures and run around like crazy at night, and that squeeky wheel wont shut up so you might have the urge to take it out. Make sure she is able to run a bit. I would recommend (if you dont already) get a hamster ball. Those provide loads of fun and much needed exercise. In the wild hamsters get miles of running in everyday.

Also you should take her out on a daily basis. This gives her the opportunity to be stimulated and should calm down her behavior

I had a male teddy bear name Frederick who escaped on such a regular basis we renamed him to Fredrick the Adventurer! One of his greatest escapes lasted almost a month! We lived in an apartment over a car repair shop and found him in the store room of the shop! He was a little beat up from going a few round with the resident wild mice but other than that an really hungry he was fine.
We finally put him in a tall glass aquarium with a really tight fitting lid. Frederick the Adventurer became the Frederick the Homebody after that!
So try a 20g HIGH or a 29g tank his escaping should be thwarted!
Good luck!

hamsters are just like that. they are great escape artists. i also lost my first pet hamster as he was able to climb out of the cage. anyway, hamsters are very active during the night . . . they need to do something as they are awake all evening. why don't you put a hamster wheel inside the cage so he can make himself busy other than trying to escape. also at pet shops maybe you can find a hamster ball - it is a transparent ball where you can put the hamster inside and let him roll to anywhere he wants. sometimes i also let my hamster roam around my room - just be sure that that the door is locked. my point is let him be busy as life inside his cage gets very lonesome indeed.

Hamsters are born escape artists, AND they love to chew! Make sure she has lots of chewy things, and not just the wooden ones. She might need a sturdier cage to keep her in.
