There are all sort of thieves out there. Check with the sender and confirm when they actually put it in the mail -- sometimes stuff mailed on Monday doesn't really get to the post office till the following week.

If it has been unreasonable long, ask the sender to stop payment and reissue. Make sure you verify your correct mailing address.

First are you sure that the person actually did send the check. There are a lot of "The Check is in the Mail excuses" out there. On more than one occasion I have had people say that they mailed it out on a Wed, but the postmark when I did get it proved it did not go out until the next Monday.

Now, if they actually did send the check and it did end up in the wrong hands someone could attempt to cash it. However, the chances in reality are pretty small. Where is it going from/to. A week is not really out of the ordinary if it is going from some place like LA to Boston, but it is usually more than enough time if it was going from LA to San Francisco.

I would contact the person who sent you the check and verify that they did send it and sent it to the correct address. Then also have them stop payment on that check and send you a new check. With the new check make sure they send it with some sort of tracking or delivery confirmation.

phone the company who wrote the check to you, ask where they sent the check, tell them you didn't receive it. They will tell you they will check with their bank to see if has been cashed...and they will probably tell you they will let you know in a few days. You don't want to rush this procedure because if they cancel the first check they may not be willing to write you another one immediately. So let them determine when another check will be issued to you. Tell them you didn't receive the check yet and you will let them know when it arrives, and give them your phone number.

A few years ago I received a check and sent it to the post office because my car was down for repair. The bank never received it. I had to call in the postal authorities which found that my post office was "holding" it, and for no good reason. The post office later said that their machines kicked it out because either the ink was too dark or the size of the print was too large. (yeah, isn't that crazy?) and so the post office "walked" the check to my bank.

So I don't know, but there could be a problem with the address on the check or envelope or it may be a post office problem, or even someone got to your mail box before you did. But, the sender could tell by the signature if you signed it or not, if it was cashed....and they will call in the police if there is something funny going on.
