What exactly do I need? What should I wear? Is it okay for a skilled friend to take the shots or should I go to a professional photographer? How many shots should I have and what should they look like? Do I need to include something other than just photos? Are comp cards required?

A skilled friend is fine to start up your online portfolio for sites like Model Mayhem or OneModelPlace. From there you can hopefully shoot with more professionals (and skilled amateurs) who can provide great images for your book.

Don't expect to shoot everything in one day- good portfolios take time to build. First get some casual shots- probably 3 different looks. You could do sportswear or swimwear beach shots on a different day. Look at some model portfolios online to get an idea of the variety of looks and styles.

For headshots to take to agencies, a professional is recommended, those shots are so important- there are some photographers who shoot nothing else. But that can be expensive, and working with a friend is a good way to gain confidence in front of the camera first.

You'll generally put together a comp card after you've accumulated good images from a few different shoots.

Your portfolio will have photos that reflect the kind of model you want to be . ..fashion, bikini, lingerie, fine art nude, etc.

It should have full lenght body, close ups (headshots) and various poses and clothing.
