You forgot to include the Evil Printer as part of the coverup or scapegoat or fall guy. Or maybe Sidney's handwriting was so atrocious that the cursively written word "pure" was innocently misread as "white", and that's how the type was set. Happens all the time.
Like the time I got a flyer from the local Baptist church to attend next Sunday's sermon. It read: "Pastor Bill will speak on 'Do you know what Hell is?' "
The next line read: "Come in and hear our choir!"

Here are the details: Originaly the first edition of the Book of Mormon said "pure and delightsome" The wording was changed to "white and delightsome" in the 1840 edition people were taking the word "white" literally and it has been used to make racist accusations, as one of the meanings of "pure" does happen to be "white" in the early dictionaries.
When the revision was made for the new edition ( I think 1979) the wording was changed back to "pure" rather than "white" thus restoring the original word.
This is a prophecy referring to the Lamanites
2 Ne. 30: 6
And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a pure and a delightsome people.

White is also a word that means pure. As someone else stated, it was a mistranslation in the later editions, but the original had pure instead of white.
It isn't referring to skin tone, but to spiritual purity. I don't know why the word was changed, but it was.
Here's a site that talks about this very thing.

Look at that, the younger generation of mormons doesn't have any idea what you're talking about. It's amazing how much they sanitize the literature and restrict them from reading about their own religion from unauthorized sources.
2 nephi 30:6
"...their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a white and a delightsome people."
In 1981, the LDS Church decided to change "the most correct book on earth" and switched the word "white" with the word "pure."

It wasn't mistranslated by us, or by God, but by anti-Mormons, who like to try to tell us what we believe, rather than the other way around.
