I've had Windows XP on my main desktop computer since it came out. I also have a desktop computer for my kids that is running Windows 98. I have reformatted my main computer and reinstalled Windows XP multiple times. If I upgrade my main computer from XP to Vista, is there a way to legally install my copy of Windows XP on my kids computer?

The tricky part is that I've already activated it too many times and the hardware is different. If I paid for the software, shouldn't I have the right to continue using it regardless of which computer I use it on or how many times I reinstall it?

you will be alright , nistall it and they will give u 30 days to activate it, just call them and tell them you installed a new hdd. they will activate it. also make sure the system will accept it, you need @ least 256 mb ram, you may get away with 128, but it will be slow. also also xp pro consumes approx. 2.5 gig of hdd space

I think it is legal to install XP on at least two computers, but if you have refformated it multiple times and then reinstalled it, then I doubt so. You can try Windows XP based freeware alternatives like SuricataOS.
Oh yes, I also forgot that there's an OS by Microsoft that runs on older computers and looks like WinXP:

Windows XP comes in different packages. There's the one's you get with your new computer then you have one that you perchase in stores on a cd or dvd disk then you have some that come from a bundle and sold to manufactures etc..

All have different rules of what you can do with them etc...
It gets very complicated to say the least of which one's can be re-installed so many times etc...

The best ting to do in your case to make it legit is to give micro$oft a ring but not anywheres called them at their head office in the U.S.A. and explain your situation .
They hav e given me good results in the past . Chances are they may give you another instalation key for free or ask for a small charge in return. That would be my approach to your situation
