8 weeks is actually a good age but many people are choosing to leave the dog's ears natural.

first question, is it papered ? the only 2 breeds recognized by the AKC of "pits" are American Staffordshire Terrier and the Stafforshire Bull Terrier. Make sure before you go through the effort and not be able to show him anyway.
2. if he is a recognized breed, no he is not too old, but there is always the chance that it will not work well and take a long time for the "crop" to take effect. You may have to hunt around for a vet to do it as well. This is a cosmetic procedure and many vets won't crop ears anymore unless it is a medical necessity.

The AKC no longer requires ears to be cropped to show and I believe that the rest of the kennel clubs are following suit. I suggest you look into the torture this surgery involves. Imagine cutting off most of the otter cartilage of your ears and see if you would like it. I apologize for sounding enraged but I have seen many a bad ear crop and know that in today's society there is no point to it. This elective surgery can cause considerable pain and infection to your little pup. And anyway they look cutter with their natural ears.

If you are planning to show him then contact the breeder for a referral, if you think he is show quality, before you cut him up, have him professionally critiqued or you could be wasting your time and risking his life for nothing. Anytime a dog is put under, you chance it, regardless as to "why"...doesn't happen often, but there are vets out there who "don't like" pits and often don't really care about their welfare, like it or not....
He is not too old at 8 weeks, they do it up until the cartilidge hardens in their ears...
Tonight's news(So. Cal) about the postman having his face attacked (news said mauled... dog hopped a four foot fence and attacked the man in the face) by a pit doesn't help with their reputation, either...

There is no need. Shows do not disqualify un-cropped pitts, in fact, a lot of Pit-breeders are pushing for the reverse.
I'd love to see cropped ears as a disqualifying point, because there is no need for it. Cropping was used for the dog-pits (so other dogs wouldn't bite their ears)/ Since dog-fighting is illegal, the cropping should be too. Not only does it look worse, it is painful for your dog. Don't do it, its costly and it makes you look like someone who cares more about looks than the happiness of the breed.

I have often heard that "cutting of ears" is inhumane that the only reason ears are cut are for looks only ~ honestly, I have never had a dog that needed ears or the tail cut. I think you need to contact your vet and get as professional opinion ~ they are the ones who can best answer your question...

A pit bull puppy should have it's ears cut anywhere from 9-13 weeks of age. The time frame varies according to the vet that you are using but this is the optimal time frame. I feel that having the ears cut makes a big difference in the look of the dog. It provides a clean polished look. However, leaving the ears uncut is a personal preference that you will have to decide for yourself :) Do not cut his tail they need it for balance!

Most vets will not want to cut ears til a pup is 12 weeks old. I had my vet doing it at 10 weeks ,but i had to give antibiotics for a week before he would agree to do them at that age.No 8 weeks is too young from my point of view as a 26 yr breeder of registered Dobermans......George

Absolutely not! As a matter of fact, the younger the better. The older your dog gets, the more it will cost you and cause more pain to your pup. Do it now! Also, as they get older the ear cartilage hardens, and if you wait too long, there is less chance the ears will actually "stand" or "erect".

Pit bulls aren't a breed you show in the US - and in the UK, cropping is illegal.
I think it's too late, yes. It's called cropping, by the way.
