Methadone is a narcotic, opiod drug that requires a doctors prescription..It is highly addictive, but is MOSTLY used to treat people who are addicted to other opiods(heroine,morphine,demerol,dilaudid-sp?-,even hydrocodone,etc.)--however,when a person takes it for addiction, they usually get it from a methadone CLINIC and clinics give it in either a liquid form or a HUGE wite or orange tablet that has to be dissolved in water. If yoyur sis has little white pills, they came from a pharmacy..Sometimes docs prescribe it for SEVERE pain(cancer, severe dejenerative joint disease)..She may be getting it from SOMEONE for the sake of abusing it,which is also very common. While some docs may prescribe it to a person to treat addiction,it is RARE--a person using it to treat addiction is most likely getting it from a clinic. When a person takes it for addiction, they can be on anywhere from 5mg a day to 300mg a day, depending on what clinic/what state they are in..Also,people would be shocked to know that MOST people going to methadone clinics are trying to get off of pain pills that they first got from a doc(frequently from a legitimate injury),not heroine!

Yes its a sad situation and it also makes me angry. There is a small upside to this though. methodone is not as harsh on the baby as what the oxycontin would have been and as an addict, she would have started using again if she hadn't have stuck to the methodone. I'm sure her doctor and pharmacist would have explained all this to her. She made the decision to stay on the program while pregnant. You could call CPS if you like but I'm not sure that they will do much considering her doctor probably let her make up her mind if she wanted to stay on it or not. Hopefully the dosage she was on was getting less and less over the weeks and that she is nearly clean so that she can get her baby healthy and focus on him. I know a lot of addicts use and abuse the methodone programs but please believe me, for some people who do it properly it actually works. I know a few people that have had their lives saved by starting the program. If you don't want to go and visit your sister or the baby then don't. Truth is she probably wouldn't want you there anyway if she knew what your attitude towards them was. She might have made a few mistakes but she's still family and family are supposed to support each other through thick and thin and love each other unconditionally.
