Beagles are prone to gaining weight. I am surprised yours weighs 40 lbs and you give him a cup of food a day. Mine is 25 lbs and I give him 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day. I guess every dog is different....the most important thing to help your dog lose weight is to get him to exercise more. You could take him on longer walks, or let him play at the dog park. Once you choose another food, feed him a little bit less each time until you're feeding him the amount you think is best. The foods people have listed above are good, such as Innova, Solid Gold, Canidae, etc. You usually have to go to a smaller locally owned pet supply store to get these, though. Petsmart and Petco don't have them.

I work at Petco and everybody there agrees that Beneful has no nutritional value, it sucks.
Did you ask what the vet recommends feeding him? There are weight management dog foods out there. You can try Science Diet.
And feed him a little less than he needs to help get the weight down.

read the directions and determine how much is reccommended for your dog's ideal weight. To get him to loose, feed 1/3 less food than what's reccommended. If he's not an active dog, look for a formula for less active dogs or senoirs.

It would be great to hit your local petsmart and ask which foods have
NO WHEAT, CORN or SOY in them at all.
That way, you get more healthy ingredients. The food will most likely start out with 1 or 2 protein sources and maybe brown rice which is better than just rice because brown rice is a great source of protein and fiber.

you're right. it's crap.we gave our dog beneful healthy weight to help him lose a few pounds. he gained a ton. i suggest looking at a different brand and not a grocery brand.check petsmart or something similar and ask your vet if he has a suggestion. we now use science diet light. many people don't like it but our dog has never been healthier or leaner.

We used to joke Beneful was only to make their poop orange! Science Diet and Iams makes some good weight loss formulas. Science Diet helped my over weight Doberman shed 14 pounds. The weight loss formula that is. It's spendy and she was a bit reluctant to eat it at first considering it's diet, but once she realized it was all she was getting she was eating like normal. After she lost the weight we tried half and half, mixing half a cup reg food with the diet. She continues to eat like this now.

Yes, almost anything. The cheapest quality food is Purina Pro Plan. If you care to spend the money you can go better, such as Royal Canin. I'm sure in about 3 min there will be several people who can tell you in depth knowlege of the best foods.

Beneful! I like the commercial, and our dogs seem to like it. I also like the Purina commercial. Our dogs seem to like Purina too, I think. Just find out what your doggy likes. Also, get something all natural. ALL NATURAL
