A commission and annointing from God to pastor a flock, received through a message/revelation from the Almighty himself. By His skillful hand, He will put in place people and events that will assist this annointing to come to fruition according to His plan. There are no coincidences in God's plan. All divine appointments happen for a reason. Those that are called to ministry have a predestined purpose in the Lord's kingdom to administer healing, counseling, preaching, teaching, witnessing for those that have the desire and hunger to have relationship with God. We do not determine who shall be appointed to pastoralship, only God does. And when God places a pastor, the Holy Spirit and gifts that bear the traits of a pastor will flow through this annointing.

I also agree with Newman, Jan and Beano. But I also think that a minister needs to be trained in a lot of areas. I've been to churches where anyone can feel the calling to open a church and preach but that doesn't make them a good preacher.
I've seen a preacher put down and mock individuals in public during church. They use this authority to get on their righteous soapboxes.

So schooling is an excellent idea before anyone becomes a preacher or minister. Rather than pointing fingers in public, learn how to associate with the congregation among other things.

With that said, I do know that there are good men who would do a wonderful job without professional training and are filled with love and the Holy Spirit.

If anyone wants to provide leadership in the church, good! But there are preconditions: A leader must be well-thought-of, committed to his wife, cool and collected, accessible, and hospitable. He must know what he's talking about, not be overfond of wine, not pushy but gentle, not thin-skinned, not money-hungry. He must handle his own affairs well, attentive to his own children and having their respect. For if someone is unable to handle his own affairs, how can he take care of God's church? He must not be a new believer, lest the position go to his head and the Devil trip him up. Outsiders must think well of him, or else the Devil will figure out a way to lure him into his trap.
Please note the following:

1 Tim 8:The same goes for those who want to be servants in the church:

We as Christians are all called to be ministers of the gospel it is our purpose and our responsibility. Being more like Christ and less of ourselves. That is the quality I am striving for.

I could quote 1st Timothy 3:1 which says,"If someone aspires to be an elder,he desires and honorable position.2 so and elder must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife.He must exercise self control, live wisely and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home and he must be able to teach.3 He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money.4 He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him.5 For if a man cannot manage his own household how can he take care of God's church?

But personally I think the most important quality a minister should have is a genuine love for God and the desire to obey the Fathers will just as Jesus did.

God is great!

The training and certification of a sponsoring Church or denomination. Oh qualities.. We can generalize but instead if you are considering such a career, ask your friends, family and acquaintances if you possess the required qualities to provide sound advice and pastoral care to others.. Part of this would be how a person reacts to various situations.. Instinctive empathy for example, when appropriate. Only people who really know you and would give honest feedback could help guide such a career decision.

Love is the key to building up the flock. A full range of Spiritual giftings would be nice too.

My favourite fruit of the spirit for ministers is GRACE, God's great enabling power!

First of all! God bless you!

The greatest calling any saved person can receive is for God to call a saved man into the ministry. It is a high calling or a heavenly calling. Apostle Paul stressed the point many times by saying he was not an apostle by the will of man, but rather by the will and calling of God.

Should be SAVED
----> Apostle referred to Titus as his son in the common faith. Titus 1:4
----> "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus." 2 Tim. 1:1
----> Some men who are not saved try to minister in the spiritual realm, but cannot.
----> To be a spiritual minister, but display attributes of the flesh.

Should be SPIRITUAL
----> Only a saved man can be spiritual and only a man who will yield himself to Bible study, prayer, and obedience will be. 1 John 1:7
----> The bishop or pastor is to be just, holy, and temperate. Titus 1:8.
----> Since he is to lead the people to worship in spirit and truth, he must be spiritual. John 4:24.
----> He isn't to be self-willed, soon angry, given to wine, or given to filthy lucre. Titus 1:7 Filthy lucre-a shameful gainer.

Should be SOUND
----> Timothy was to commit what he heard to faithful men. 2 Timothy 2:2 men who were able to teach others.
---->"Holding fast the faithful word. As he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. " Titus 1:9 Sound means in health.
----> Earnestly contend for the faith. Jude 3 Pastors and teachers were given for the perfecting of saints, work of the ministry, and edifying the body of Christ. Eph. 4:12
----> The time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine. 2 Tim. 4:3

Should be STEADFAST
----> Faithful stewards of the mysteries of God. 1 Cor. 4:2
----> Isaiah volunteers to go. How long? Until cities be without inhabitant and houses without man. Isa. 6:11
----> Apostle Paul taught the church to be steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the Lord's work. 1 Cor. 15:58

Should the SEPARATED
----> To be blameless. Titus 1:6
----> Purge himself. 2 Tim. 2:21 Flee youthful lust. 2 Tim. 2:22
----> Not to get entangled with affairs of this life. 2 Tim. 2:4
----> Come out from among them. 2 Cor. 6:17

Should be STRONG
----> To be strong in grace. 2 Tim. 2:1
----> Mosed told Joshua to be strong and of good courage. Joshua 1:6,7,9
----> The Lord is our strength. Psalm 18:1; 2 Cor. 12:9

1Ti 3:1 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
1Ti 3:2 Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
1Ti 3:3 not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
1Ti 3:4 He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive,
1Ti 3:5 for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church?
1Ti 3:6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
1Ti 3:7 Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Newman has the right qualities listed in the Bible....plus you really need a "call" from the Lord. (I'm currently studying to be an ordained minister in the Assemblies of God).

Blessings.

In addition to Newman's answer, I would add the fruits of the Spirit, but above all, love. Also Godly wisdom.
