Blackbird. There was a story back in the old days that an SR-71 was flying so high and so fast that the planes control surfaces lost effectiveness in the thin atmosphere and the plane skipped off into space...

the SR-71 still holds the speed and altitude record for an air breathing aircraft. It still has a jet engine that needs air. Some rocket propelled craft have gone higher and faster, the X15 is the most obvious example.

SR-71 or YF-12 is the high alttitude choice. It flew high enough that we could still take pics of Soviet property without violating their airspace.
