I hear this term thrown around a lot on military.com forums and yes I'm too darned lazy to look it up, I feel like awarding someone ten points. What really are they? Humor appreciated.

Seeing as LAVA got the answer right, I will use this space to vent before my head explodes!! Arty and FO's are pogues!!! WTF are you talking about!! frichalf, sorry, but your crazy. First of all, you LOVE the Arty when it is laying down fire, or smoke, or WP for you, don't you? And as far as FO's go, the F in FO stands for "FORWARD". What do you think that means? It means we go out, with the grunts, and call in fire when then need it. I spent time with 2nd ANGLICO and we could call everything from 60mm mortars to 16inch Naval guns and fast movers if we had to.Plus we are jump qualified. And we are CONSTANTLY deployed. For every one Marine division, there is one COMPANY from ANGLICO for support. Walk a mile in my boots, I have been in yours.

A pogue is any non-combat arms related MOS or "Job" in the military. For example a supply guy pogue, administrative personel pogues, anyone who isn't humpin' it, and sits behind a desk is a pogue. Except for a commanding officer, or injured comrade given a desk job. A cook is a pogue but the grunts love'em because they keep them fed.

Ok most of the previous posts are kinda correct but let me say it how it is. It is true that a pogue is someone who isnt in a combat arms MOS, but to add on to that, some combat arms MOS's are still pogues. Like, field artillery and forward observers, until we actually use these people in combat they will still be pogues.
Also, pogues are the people who dont leave the FOB or camp and buy all the good movies and gear from the PX or eating all the good food from the chow hall while we are out doing patrols and missions.

The word actually comes from the Irish language

a " Pogue" is a kiss also used as a very rude comment by saying "Pogue ma hone!" which translates to kiss my rear.

There was allso an Irish Pop group called "The Pouges".

A military slang used by front line troops to describe staff and other rear or support units. One who knows everything about nothing but knows nothing about important things. Tag this one "Get that Pogue out of here, he's had enough to drink."

a "Pogue" has a couple of definitions. One is an administrative type person. One who sits in comfort and keeps the paper work going. Rear Echelon types.
OR: A person who doesn't measure up to the standards of his/her profession.
Have you heard of "Pogey bait"? That is candy, cookies, etc. The reason it is called that is because those items are more readily available to the Rear Echelon, administrative "Pogues" than front line "combat arms" type personnel i.e. while in a field environment i.e. war or training exercises.

P.O.G.

Person Other Than Grunt.

Basically anyone that isn't infantry.

Which is retarded, because I'm a Combat Engineer, and called a POG, which I find bullcrap. But whatever.
