This is an upper endoscopy, also known as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and allows looking at the esophagus, stomach and beginning part of the small bowel (duodenum). It is usually performed on an empty stomach with intravenous sedatives. If they need to look deeper, then it can be performed with a longer flexible instrument called an enteroscope, and they can typically look further than the duodenum into the jejunum.
The procedure can take as little as 5-10 minutes if everything is normal and the patient is well prepared. It is also possible to perform this without sedation with a slim-profile endoscope than can be passed through he nose with a local anesthetic rather than through the mouth. If sedated, you may not even notice that you had one. Recovery is pretty quick. It could take a few minutes or less if they use propofol to sedate you, or up to an hour if they use a benzodiazepine (e.g. midazolam) and an opioid (e.g. meperidine). You might have a sore throat for a few hours after the test, but don't count on it.
It is not a difficult test to go through. It is even possible to have it without any sedation and just use an anesthetic spray to numb the throat or gargle some lidocaine.
It is a very sensitive test to look for ulcers, inflammation, etc in the upper gastrointestinal tract. It also allows biopsies to be obtained, strictures to be dilated, and bleeding ulcers to be treated endoscopically.

I think you are talking about an Endoscopy. This procedure is putting in a tube with a camera on its tip down your throat to your stomach. The porpose of this procedure is to visualize if there are defects inside such as in the case of Gastritis wherein doctors would see scratches on the surface of the stomach. Others things to see would be polyps, which are small fleshy things that protrude from the stomach walls.
No, I did'nt have one. According to patients, there is gagging at the start since normal people have gag reflex as protection from aspiration. When the tube goes in further, gagging lessens but throat and stomach discomfort predominates but the good news is, there is no pain involve, maybe very slight pain on some patients but generally there's no pain, just discomfort.
It depends on the patient if she/he wants to be drugged and depends on the doctor if she/he recommends. In my experience, this procedure can be done on an out patient department so patients can just go home after the procedure. No IV is required.
Remember that it varries from doctor to doctor and from hospital to hospital. What I just told you about is based on how I know it. It could be different.
If you are to undergo this procedure then better consult your doctor and ask him/her.

This test is done on an outpatient basis. you will be in and out in the same day. it's a simple procedure performed, some docs call it an upper gi and others refer to it as an endoscopy. the meds they give thru the IV is mainly something to relax you and then the versasit drug. verasit is a medicine that is commonly known as the amnesia drug. the test itself doesn't last long at all. you won't feel a thing and the doctors even give you pictures of your esophogus and your stomach. they do this when you are having problems with your belly, (i.e.: major reflux going on, heartburn, lots of vomiting, possibly ulcers, etc.) it's a piece of cake test. you should be fine.,

My husband had this done. They sedated him, but he was not completely out and tried to pull the tube out when they weren't done yet... It didn't take long to do the actual procedure, and he did have IVs. But, he was also very dehydrated because he couldn't swallow for 11 hours prior to going to the hospital (which is why they scoped him), and we'd been there 10 hours before they did the procedure, so I'm sure part of the IVs were to hydrate. His throat wasn't sore, and the sedative wore off fairly quickly once he'd eaten something. He said it wasn't scary and he didn't feel anything. He didn't even remember being "awake" for part of the time.

It is an endoscopy (spelling may be wrong). I had it done. The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes. They give you a sedative, however it put me completely to sleep. After waking up in the recovery area, they don't keep you there long. They make sure you have a ride home, and you are told to take the rest of the day off work (due to the seditive).
I hope that answers your question.

I have had one and they put me to sleep. It doesn't take very long but you wouldn't notice since your asleep. Just a warning don't plan anything that afternoon sometimes they put medicine in the i.v. that "cleans" you out if you get what i am saying. Other than that no pain and pretty simple.
