If so, what is it and how often do you go and what does it consist of?

RCIA is the "Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults." It teaches the basic catechism and theology of the Catholic Church. Some people go through it to convert to Catholicism (or be baptized); some go through it because they are marrying a Catholic and need to know more about the religion; some Catholics go through it as a 'refresher' course.

Typically, RCIA meets once a week, materials are usually free and class consists of a lecture and a question-and-answer session. (If an RCIA instructor doesn't allow questions, you need a different one!). People who are catechumens (they want to be baptized) and people who are candidates (already baptized but want to become Catholic) typically need a "sponsor" - a confirmed Catholic who can answer any additional questions that don't fit into class time and who will also stand by that person as they are baptized and confirmed in the class. Many RCIA programs offer free baby-sitting, snacks, etc.

Classes usually start in September or October and end at Easter Vigil in the spring time. Easter Vigil is the night before Easter and that's when you would be baptized, confirmed and receive your first Holy Communion.

My husband and I did it last Sept - Easter.
We went once a week for an hour and 1/2.
I was kind of dreading it cause its a big commitment but it went by so FAST!

Its basically class! You go over all kind of stuff from the 10 commandments to the 7 sacraments. I liked it. It was easy and interesting.
There were some big events that consisted of going to mass as the RCIA group but only 2 or 3 in all. It was painless and we met very nice people!
I think you will like it!

It teaches the beliefs of The Church. About once a week is how often it is. That's all. God bless.
