I've been wearing glasses since I was 14 and the older I've gotten, the more my eyes have been dependent on glasses. I'm to the point where I have severe myopia and a eye doctor told me my eyes were so bad that lasik surgery wouldn't be able to correct my vision. I'm now at that bifocal stage and I'm not even in my prime!! So what's the purpose of needing glasses or contacts if they don't improve your eyesight?

To put this very simply: The purpose of correction (contact lenses/eyeglasses) is to help you see clearer while you are wearing them.

The reason why you have developed a refractive error (myopia) is mostly due to genetics.... corrective devices play no role in this!
Wearing eyeglasses/contacts do not improve or worsen vision..... they simply correct your vision while wearing them!!!!!
That is the purpose so people with poor vision can see!!
In my opinion that is a pretty significant purpose.... if you think about it without your glasses/contacts how would you see or function through everyday life tasks ???
Anyways hope this helps :)

Many people think that since you get an "rx" for glasses that the eyes are some how being cured but this is very far from the truth. Eyeglasses contain no medicine and are only there to help a person see better while wearing them. I have severe myopia. I started wearing glasses in kindergarten and now am 29 with severe myopia and am starting to feel the need for reading glasses over my contacts (would act the same as your bifocals). Us high myopes are extremely dependent upon our eyewear because we need them to see when we drive, walk, look in the mirror...see the alarm clock, TV, computer etc... I am in the same boat as you when it comes to not being a candidate for LASIK but you have another option.

You can have a surgery that is much like the surgery that a person has when they have cataracts. An ophthalmologist can cut a flap in your eye, take your old lens out and replace it with an intraocular lens. It's pricey because insurance won't cover it but it works. You may have to wear reading glasses after surgery or in your late 30's early 40's (sorry don't know how old you are now). Make an appointment with an eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) and see what s/he says about this procedure. Also check out this website http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-cle-iol-rle.htm

TO MY UNDERDTSNDING WEARING GLASSES IMPROVES YOUR EYESIGHT. THERES NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT CURING THE PROBLEM . ONLY DOCTORS CAN CORRECTIVE THE PROBLEM. IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR THE GLASSES YOUR EYES MIGHT OF BEEN ALOT WORSE THAN WHAT THEY ARE NOW.

As you wear glasses you know yourself, they do not improve your vision. They merely focus the image. Your question is on a par with asking a one legged person why they use crutches because they don't make a new leg grow.

What's the point of wearing a winter coat if it doesn't make you grow fur? Or driving a car if it doesn't make you able to run at 60mph?

The point of glasses is to allow you to see clearly while wearing them.

glasses don't improve your vision, but they help you see things that you couldn't see normally WITHOUT GLASSES.
