If you are going active duty then it would be useless to get an apartment because you will be stationed on the coast. It depends on if you are sea or shore duty on your first tour as far as living out in town. Shore duty assignments usually let younger sailors live out in town and give them Basic Allowances for Housing. Sea duty on the other hand, you will most likely be living in a barracks until you are a Petty Officer 3rd class.

Joining the reserves will keep you in Waco and allow you to get that apartment, but you will be missing out on a whole lot of world travel. I have been to 16 countries in 11 years. Your decision.

I don't think there much Navy around Waco.

The Navy will let you fill out a duty preference sheet of commands/locations that you want to serve at. But duty preference sheets are called "dream sheets" for a reason; the Navy will send you where you are needed. I asked for a battleship and was stationed on an oiler.

As for apartments, unless the rules have changed, only married sailors get housing allowances to live off base. If you are not married and decide to live off base, you will have to pay rent by yourself.

Depends on whether you are signing up for the reserves or the active Navy. Obviously, you will live where you decide if you are in the reserves, but in the active Navy you can be sent anywhere. Once you get to your permanent duty assignment, whether it is on a ship or on shore, you can then get an apartment off the ship, but you still may need your chain of command to approve it, and you won't be making a bundle in BAH, so be careful until you make E-4 at least.

You need to understand that is you are enlisting in active duty Navy, the liklihood is that you will be no where near Waco for the majority of your career. The military will send you where they need you, moving you every 3-4 years or as needed, and that is where you will live.

You seriously need to talk to your recruiter. Do you honestly not realize that the Navy will own you and will send you whereever they want?
