I have been to St. Lucia 12 times and that is not too far off the coast of South America. I would love to go to South America. I met a lady from Gianna in Stl Lucia and it sounds nice. I also met some girls from Venezuela but they said that they came to St. Lucia because there was too much crime in Venezuela. We don't really know very much about South America and there are more tours that go to other places. Maybe your governments should do more advertising in Canada.

Three reasons that I know of:
1) Cost. It is much less expensive to go to Mexico or Cuba from Canada, and many of the airlines and travel agencies have promotions with resorts in those countries to get better deals.
2) Distance. Canadians normally go on vacation to a warm country when the winter season arrives. We can fly down to Florida, Cuba, or Mexico in about 4-5 hours. Flights from Canada to Brazil are 10-12 hours. Why spend twice the amount of time on an airplane?
3) Safety. Canadians have heard stories of kidnappings and murders in Venezuala, Columbia, Chile, and other countries. Just this week, Caracas was described as one of the most dangerous cities in the world. I would rather go to a place where I feel a little safer and won't be singled out as a tourist to be preyed upon.
And contrary to what someone else suggested, it is not because Canadians are cheap. We spend our money wisely, and perhaps do not flaunt it like some other people do. Which would you choose: $3000 to go for a week in San Paolo, Brazil or $2500 for two weeks in Cancun?
And since when did tipping automatically demand 25% of your bill anyway? I tip based on how good the service was. That may range from a $1.50 tip on a $3.50 breakfast down to no tip at all if the person was rude or the service terrible.
I have nothing against going to South America for a vacation, Jose. The problem is that there are so many other places that are less expensive, safer, and more readily available to go to before I plan my South America vacation.
¡Saludos de sus amigos norteños!

I did go to Venezuela many years ago (back when gas there was less than 1 cent a litre or something like that - anyway, absolutely loved it), but as others have said it's quite expensive now to travel to South America. Mexico, the Caribbean countries (e.g. Dominican Republic, Bermuda, Barbados, Cuba, St. Lucia, St. Maarten) and Florida are far more accessible to Canadians as many tour operators offer very competitively priced all-inclusive packages to these areas. Haven't seen any such offers for South America - in fact fares for Europe and on occasion Asia are cheaper than say a flight to Lima, Rio de Janeiro (no flights to Brasilia) or Santiago.

South American countries don't advertise as much as other countries in Canada. Cuba probably advertises the most for a latin America country in Canada, and as a result, alot of Canadians do travel there. Brazil would be the most advertised country in Canada.
Tickets to SA countries are also more expensive than Europe or even Asia.

Airfare isn't exactly cheap from Canada to South America. Many Canadians go to Central America though especially during the long winter to get away from the cold and the snow.

Distance. It is extra travel time and expense to get there, and would have to compete with going to say, Central American Countries. Or, even Southern American States.

In general, Canadian are cheap.
They will vacation in the US, most likely drive to the destination.
Or opt out for Cuba. Cuba is in desperate need for foreign currency and has great deal for Canadians.
South American airfare is expensive. They also don't tip as well as Americans. The average Canadian tip is between 10-15% the Average American tip is between 15-20%
