Wow, great question. I had forgoten the answer because it's complicated and it happened over many years. Check out:

Basically, Ch 1 was reassigned to FM radio, then later CH 7 got reassigned to FM radio and the radio guys needed time to move up to the new FM band. CH1 was never freed and got reassigned for other uses. TV makers got tired of renumbering their channels and we got stuck without a Ch1.

I think it's about time we bring back Ch1! Let's call Ch2 Ch1 and call Ch3, Ch2! But let's skip Ch4... 4 has been a bad number to me!

The FCC took it back and gave it to the Cops and Firefighters...they found it worked better for them....

And the manufacturers didn't want any confusion about channel 1, so they took it off their tuning knobs.

That's why Channel 1 hasn't existed since the 50's...

Josh B's "wishful thinking" is exactly what the TV manufacturers wanted to avoid -- Confusion.....

YES the FM band is what the Cops and Firefighters <> to tranmit/recieve.....
Now they use the Digital Spectrum....

when the FCC first allotted spectrum for TV they allotted space for VHF stations 1 Thu 13 but there was so little interest in TV stations they gave the spectrum occupied by channel 1 to other use. renumbering was just felt to be to much trouble.

I use 2 live in NY and on cable they have NY1 so believe its where you are from....

In 1945, the FCC decided to reserve channel 1 for low-power community television stations, and moved existing channel 1 stations to higher frequencies.

I've only seen channel 1 in schools. Maybe it's a for profit deal.
