The community life is what you make it, like most New York Neighborhoods. You can be as involved or as uninvolved as you like. Most of the streets are tree-lined, there are a lot of parks and the promenade along the river for outdoor recreation. There is a bar scene, especially east of Third Ave., great restaurants, new clubs and lounges are popping up here too, and, of course, some of the world's best shops and flagships but it is an expensive neighborhood on the whole. There are good community schools and a lot of private schools and a lot of children. There are block associations and community board involvement if that is an interest. There are many museums and cultural institutions as well as numerous foreign consulates. There is frequent, reliable transportation (relative to the MTA system as a whole of course) although the Lex. Ave. line can be a hike from York Ave. If you can afford it, it is a great area to live in.

A lot of Wall Streeters live in that area, as well as families with old money. As far as stores, boutiques, restaurants, clothing, all high price.
