I would use trains, you see more scenery, and car rentals in Europe are not cheap.

I'd say it depends on whether you want to visit more cities and towns, all of which have train stations. And, trains are fun, fast, and you can meet more people.
But if you want to explore the countryside, renting a car would be good. Gas is expensive, though, and if you get a German Railpass you can save money. Dealing with a car in a big city is not so great.

Does it have to be either-or? You can alwayys do your general travel by train, then rent a car for a day or so to explore the countryside and drive down the autobahn a bit. Be careful, though - despite what you may have heard, there are in fact many speed limits and traffic cameras, and fines can be quite hefty.

I lived there for seven years and the trains and other public transportation are very reliable and safe. However there is nothing like zooming down the autobahn in a big BMW. Splurge and rent one.

I think that taking the train is more economic but if you have a car you could go to more places and you won't have to walk that much.

You've gotta drive the Autobahn - 80 miles an hour.

Depends how far you are going. Deutsche Bahn is pretty economical and efficient for long distance travel.
