I, being an owner of both store bought and online bought diamonds, do prefer the store, but I enjoy looking at every single stone until all I see is sparkles. I do however think you should only buy from a good comapny and from a place you can walk in for the warranty checks. One ring I have has a warranty that I can take to the store and have inspected, but it was purchased online. It was a great deal and it was great quality of stones. You can often find a better stone for less money online instead of settling for something in a store where you don't have the selection. Either way you go, I think you will be fine, just go thrugh a company not an individual.

Go to a reputable jeweler. If they are really good they can often let you see the diamond on it's own (before it is placed in the setting) and you can look at it through the magnifier. That way you can be sure you are getting what you are paying for (otherwise they can hide flaws with the setting). Don't forget to get the certificate of authenticty that has the diamond rated, etc.
To be honest, if I had to do it all over again, I would have gotten a good quality Cubic Zirconia. Not one of those cheapy ones, but a really good one. My diamond is pretty small (half a carat) and it cost several thousand dollars. My friend has a cubic zirconia ( a good one) and trust me, everyone thinks her husband is Mr Money Bags for buying such a huge beautiful sparkly "diamond." Nobody else can tell it's a fake. She only confided in me once when she'd had a few too many margaritas! It's gorgeous - I can't tell.

They both can be a benefit. The rings online can give you some idea or even maybe what you would like to buy. You can print copy(ies) of the ring(s) you like online and then shop at jewelry store. Sometimes you will find certain diamonds or shape of diamonds, but would like have it on a different ring. This is the reason why going to a jewelry store you can see on hand what you're buying. I am sure your fiancee will love what you chooses. God bless

i agree with rox. learn how far your money can go. some whole sale jewel marts in big cities can give you a lot more ring for your money than a mall jewel store, not that there arent great mall jewel stores. do you live near la or ny, there are actual diamond districts in town that sell directly to the public. also there are stores that sell nothing but engagement rings. do you know someone who has a good jeweler? would they take you in to see rings? you can with a little leg work discover how far your money will go. just walking into the first store in the mall and plunking down some cash is fine, but then you will never know unless you see more rings and more stones.

You should look both online and in stores. Online search engines like the one on www.bluenile.com are great at seeing what you can afford. Plus online prices are usually better for the diamond. I went by the grades and made sure it was certified by a reputable agency.
For the setting seeing it in person is needed. I bought the diamond online and my wife had it set. Could not have bought a diamond of that quality with a certificate at that price locally. I bought at www.uniondiamond.com.
Make sure wherever you buy it, you can trust them.

Go to the store. this is a big decision. You will want to see what you are buying.
Those online stores can be a rip off. You never know if what you are getting online. Good luck.

Shop the stores first. Then, if you find one you like, you may be able to purchase the same ring cheaper online. Good Luck.

Consider looking at the local coin (silver & gold bouillion) dealers for a diamond ring, then take it to a repair place for sizing. You will be surprised at the deals you will find! You can really stretch your budget that way! Diamonds don't hold their value at all.

You should absolutely go to a store. If this is the girl you wish to marry, she must be worth the time to go out to a store!!
