I work in customer service, and it really grates on my nerves when rich donors come in and act like you should know who they are and give them whatever they ask for, no questions asked.

To me, every customer is the same. The poor single mom who is on a financial scholarship to be able to even attend deserves the same attention.

There is a congressman who comes into my work. He never identifies himself, he just stands at the locked doors and shrugs his shoulders like he doesn't understand why it isn't opening for him. I don't know him, I don't know his name... all I know if I don't like him because he expects me and my coworkers to bend over backwards for him. Sure, there are always going to be clients who you go the extra mile for.. but those are the clients who come in, know your name, ask how your children are by name, and are actually friendly. Of course you would do anything to make them happy.

So just because someone donates money to the organization you work for, does

that make them special to a degree that they deserve special service? They don't sign my check. They don't even have the courtesy to say hello.

I feel you. Some people are spoiled and are so used to everyone jumping when they say that they don't even realize they are doing it --- either that or they have an entitlement problem.

It's coarse, but from the institutional point of view, yes, big donors get special treatment, for all the reasons you might expect. I don't think that makes it right. But your boss and the guy above him would probably toe the line on this one.

And there is a difference between having money and having class, as you point out.

I couldn't agree more with your complaints, I have the same ones! But, it is how the sick game is played. Unfortunately in our society you will find a lot of those "do gooders" that expect the golden treatment but thankfully you will also find those that want to be treated just like everyone else. I personally think the "system" needs to be shaken up. I have some very well off clients that come in and act just like every other regular joe and I break my back for them but the ones that come in and act like I "owe" them something get absolutely no respect from me. It is cut and dry, straight to business and if they even so much as stray off the subject of the business at hand I pretend I don't hear them and get right back to it. I refuse to give them that attention as I don't feel it is deserved. So, amen sister! Give em' hell! LOL! =)

Also, I think that those that "expect" something for thier charity are giving it from the wrong place to begin with. Those that give from the heart give without any expectations.

treat everyone with the same amount of courtesy and expect everyone to follow the same rules. people who think they're entitled are mislead by those who bend over backwards. you're doing the right thing by raising the bar.

we have a similiar situation around here. i just remember that the politician doesn't sign my paycheck, and if the boss says i need proper identification for everyone who walks through the doors, then that's the way its going to be. if you lose your job for breaking the rules, the people for whom you broke the rules will not bail you out.

That should not be the case but unfortunately it is. Wealthy donors expect and usually get preferential treatment. They do not have the spirit Jesus said one should have when giving:Hence when you go making gifts of mercy, do not blow a trumpet ahead of you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to YOU, They are having their reward in full. But you, when making gifts of mercy, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, that your gifts of mercy may be in secret; then your Father who is looking on in secret will repay you._ Matthew 6:2-4

If you work for a non-profit, they may not sign your check but they are who put the money in the bank so your check doesn't bounce.

If you want to get fired from a non-profit really fast, make an important donor go away and donate somewhere else.

In a very real way, it is the donors that own a non-profit because without their support, you go away.
