While a phone call to the vet never hurts and is free, I do know some dogs are late starters. I think it's a good idea to avoid early spaying and the associated health risks that go with it. Just remember that when she does go into heat, make sure there are no slip ups. Accidental litters can be easily avoided by leashing your dog and making sure you are with her every time she walks out the door, no exceptions, even if there is a fenced area, not even for a minute. Remember, no excuses for accidental litters!

Some dogs go into heat at different ages. If her mother when in to heat late it's most likely she will too. Some dogs can go into heat as early as 4 months and some as late as a year and a half. Just like humans start having periods at different ages so can dogs. They all have different flow(how much they bleed) levels. I would go off when her mother started going into heat. I would expect 9 months or later.

Happens sometimes. I had a female once that didn't come in until she was almost 14 months. There are a lot of factors that play into when they go into season and there is always the chance that they can have a 'silent' season as well but I wouldn't worry at this point.
It would be best to get her spayed as soon as possible though as the beneficial effects of spaying can be better - i.e. prevention of mammary cancer is like almost a done deal if they are spayed prior to their first season and each season they have after that increases greatly their chances of having cancer.

don't worry. mine didn't go into her heat until right before her 1st bday....which is the 25th of this month. she had it a few weeks before hand so urs could do the same.
they just get it whenever, theres no knowing when.
Get her spayed asap~thnx 4 bein responsible
oh but be sure not to get her fixed right after its best to wait 2-3 months after(straight from the vets mouth) that way everything can go back to normal. Plus it helps give more time to save up =) good luck

Depends a lot of times on how big she is. The bigger breeds take longer to mature therefore longer to go into heat. I think my Rotty went into heat a little after a year and she's a small rotty only around 60 lbs then.

Sometimes they will not go into heat until after they are a year old, so it is not a problem. Hopefully she will be spayed before that happens.

Could be late.. I have one that didn't come into season the first time til she was 14 mos.. If you are getting her spayed. You should do it now, cause she could come into season anytime. It will be far easier on her if you get her spayed before she comes into season the first time. Surgery is easier and recovery is faster.
