He needs to see a doctor right away. What is likely happening is he has carotid artery disease - these arteries feed the head, and lipid (fat, due to having high cholesterol in the blood) builds up in them. Then little chunks of it break off and head toward the brain or eye. When they hit an blood vessel that's too small for them to get through, they get stuck for a second, leading to a lack of blood flow to the area. Lack of blood flow to the eye = central retinal artery occlusion or CRAO. Lack of blood to the brain = stroke. If the blood can force it's way in, and the block is temporary, there can be a recovery of vision. It sounds like your father had a 'mini stroke' or "transient ischemic attack" (TIA). Your dad needs to get out of bed and go to the hospital; they will do an ultrasound of his carotid arteries to see if they need to be treated.

He could start to become blind, he could have alzheimer's. He needs to go see an eye doctor to tell him what's wrong. He may be losing his vision, the elder he gets. It happens to quite some elder people.

Could have been a mini stroke. Have him go to his physician ASAP. Symptoms could get worse and he could have more if that's what it was.
