I would get my own bank account so that my Mom could not do that to me. Your friend is an adult and she needs to be shown respect. Her receiving an allowance for money that she is making is ridiculous!

Has your friend been careless with money in the past? Is she saving up for something and her mom is helping her? I dont mean to answer a question with questions but these things are possibly reasons for the mom's behaviour. BUT having said that, a 23 yr old should have the maturity level to budget their own money and spend it wisely.

It would depend on what her mom is doing with her money. If her mom is investing it for her future, she may be doing her a huge favor. If she is using the money..not cool. As long as the allowance is enough to live on..I'd be cool with it. I only say this because I've been on my own all my adult life without any parents to help me and it's been tough with money. It would be nice to have someone that really cares and would help me make some good choices.

I can't believe that anyone 23 would allow anyone to take their hard earned money and just give them an allowance. She needs to ask her employer to make a direct deposit into her checking account and then arrange to pay room and board to her Mother until she can save enough to get a place of her own.

your friends mom may have a legitimate reason for doing that. maybe your friend owes her mom lots of money or if your friend still lives at home and is trying to save money for whatever reason. there are a quite a few reasons this is happening. but if it were me and there were NO reasons for it i would avoid my mom on payday and few days there after.

There are people who just have no money sense.
My job at the bank is managing rich peoples personal finances.
I also do this for some of my close friends, because left to themselves, they would fritter it all away....

question it depends on the culture you are living. but to give your salary to your mom and she gives you only allowance, sounds like asian so i say it is ok but please tell her (your friend) to keep some for her self savings rainy day money you know who knows you (she) might need it in the near future.
