YES...,It's clinical name is NECROTIZING FASCIITIS. It's a Class A Streptococcus bacteria that enters the body usually thru a sore or damaged area of the skin prior to exposure. The latest case is a Texas man who became infected in the water in the Gulf of Mexico. He is is very serious condition, because his case is advanced and took an unusual amount of time before doctors figured out what was wrong. In many cases this infection is in fact fatal. It can be picked up by swimming ,wading or exposing any injured skin area to ocean water. It usually is caught by people that have conditions that have lowered their immune system prior to exposure. The Texas man had a diabetic foot ulcer that was exposed when he went into the water. It actually disolves flesh and skin tissue, it doesn't actually eat it. It is hard to treat because the bacteria is not killed easily and is resistant to treatment with anti-biotic's, even the latest and strongest available today, only work part of the time. You can research this further if you wish on the Internet. There is a man here in Baltimore,Maryland who also was infected in North Carolina on the beach while wading thru the surf. He is also critical, but is slowly responding to treatments.

Never heard of this one myself, but in ponds and rivers where there are rats, you can catch Leptospiral jaundice, (weils disease) from the water. It's a killer if not treated, starts with flu-like symptoms.

Ive heard rumors about it in my area (South Texas), but from what Ive been told numerous times, is that it survives in stagnant water, where there is no filtration or water flow.

This is also a man made bacteria used in Bio-remediation facilities, or waste water treatment plants. I guess their little monsters are getting loose.
