Laser vision correction has been found to be very safe - vision-threatening complications are extremely rare. The most common complication would be under- or over-correction. You could also experience odd glare and halos that could affect you. However, people do lose vision. If you want to be safe, have the doctor perform PRK instead of LASIK - it takes longer to recover from, but it has been around longer and doesn't involve the creation of a corneal flap.

However, long term studies have not been completed - a 10 year study of PRK(1) and an 11 year study of LASIK(2) have found both to be safe out to those time points, but beyond that we have no idea.

Don't pick an ophthalmologist based on cost. Think about it. You want someone that will properly follow you up and can deal with problems.

I started needing glasses at 13. and every few years stronger ones.I had lasik done when I was 22. I'm 30 today. My vision is still 20/20. I could never pull off the contacts... the thought of having to stick those things in my eyeballs and pulling them out every day or few days... got me to think about laser. sure theres cutting and its uncomfortable.. but it's 20 minutes one day, if it's done right. So it was so far the best investment I have ever made with my money. statistically speaking it is very safe nowadays. a lot safer than when I did it. The cut in your eye is not the worst part. The worst part is that they put a type of clear bandage over your wide-open eye to hold the pupil in place during the cut. To me that was the most freakish and annoying part. my doctor gave me a valium right before and it helped me relax. I didn't feel the cut, just some pressure. it was all done in less than 15 mins. took about 3 days of blurry vision and then i could see perfectly 20/20.. it was like being born again lol. make sure you use a good doctor and not the cheapo ones. good luck!

i know 2 people who did it and i consulted a doctor aswell, its 98% safe and fast and easy. doctor said it's safer if u do it after 25, and ur eyesight should be really weak, not 0.5 or 0.25. i'm thinking of going for it aswell,it's painless u just feel a bit of discomfort the first day.
