The verb for "was" in Spanish is an irregular verb, it's derived from estar "to be".

I was - Yo estaba.
You were (informal) - Tu estabas
We were - Nosotros estabamos
You were (formal) - Ud. estaba

Hi!

"WAS", the past of the "TO BE" verb in English can be either one of two Spanish verbs.

The English verb "TO BE" can be translated as the Spanish SER or ESTAR.

For "SER", (past tense)
Yo era
Tú fuiste
El fue
Nosotros fuimos
Vosotros fuisteis
Ellos fueron.

For "ESTAR" (past tense)
Yo estuve
Tu estuviste
Él estuvo
Nosotros estuvimos
Vosotros estuvísteis
Ellos estuvieron.

the verb(s) are: estar and ser

depends on what you are talking about. If you are talking about a location or condition, (i.e: I was in bed last night, I was sick last week) you would use estar:

I was - estuve (or estaba in imperfect form)
You were: Estuviste (estabas)
He, she, it was: estuvo (estaba)
we were: Estuvimos (estabamos)
They were: Estuvieron (estaban)

If you are talking about description words (i.e. He was tall, The party was boring) you use SER

I was - Fui (era)
you were - Fuiste (eras)
He, she, it was: Fue (era)
We were: fuimos (eramos)
They were: fueron (eran)

hope this helps
