We rescued a dog about a week ago. Everything was going great. We couldn't have asked for a better dog. However, my husband had poker night tonight and when one of the guys came in, our dog started barking really loud (which we have never heard) and then bit him!!! Luckily our friend was ok. What should we do about the dog? Has anyone ever had anything like this happen?

thanks for you answers...i think she was scared. The kitchen was dark and he just walked in (like the guys usually do) We may have to start answering the door every time now.

Yes, if the dog is normally a great dog with everyone else but this one time, you may need to spend more time socializing the dog to more and more people so he knows everything is ok. Your friend probably had a body language, smell or appearance to that which is associated with something negative & got scared. My girlfriends Chihuahua bites everyone, so when I started working with him, the trick we do is to "introduce" him to people & the "alpha" dog lets him know its ok to let this one into the pack. If we do that, all is fine & no biting!

I have fostered many dogs and can tell you it can take several days, weeks, or months for a dog to settle in and sometimes show behavior good/ or bad that they didnt show at first. I would talk to the rescue and find out if they had any similar experience ,maybe they can tell you. My friends rescue is afraid of anyone that wears a ball cap, so who knows? She is in a new situation and may be afraid or maybe she is trying to be a "good dog" and protect you but it sounds like she will need some socialization and obedience training depending how serious you think this attack is and how you want to proceed. Talking to the rescue is the first step though. Good Luck, I hope it works out for you!

This is the reason I don't like rescue dogs
Don't get me wrong saving a life is great but when they get biting and attacking it really makes me wonder
My sister had adopted a doberman from a rescue she was told the dog was a greatFAMILY dog however when her husband got home it attacked the dog went back to the rescue and her husband went to the hopital for 35 stitches we were thatnkful thought that it attacked him and not their 5 year old daughter.
Another one again the dog hated men but the new owners weren't told that in advance that dog was put to sleep it was a very vicious dog around children and the new owners thought it best.

No, I've never heard of anything like this. Where did you rescue this dog from? Did you do the vaccinations on the dog? Did he bite any other friends, was the first time that this dog saw that particular person? In any case, if he bites, i suggest that you go see a professional trainer. They have classes for aggressive dogs... Good luck!

As a veterinary technician I deal with a lot of behavioral issues. I would recommend putting your pet in training classes. These classes benefit in two ways.
1) The will teach you and your pet to communicate effectively. This will create a feeling of trust and bonding between your family and your pet. When your pet sees you being relaxed, he should relax too.
2) Training classes are also a great way to socialize you dog, both to people and other dogs, this should decrease the amount of anxiety your dog feels around new people.
Another suggestion, take your pet to crowded areas, not to crowded, keep him on a leash and next to you at all times. Let him see people and learn to relax. Social anxieties are the easiest to prevent and often the hardest to correct. Good Luck

You have no clue what has happened to that dog in the past. The dog could of been beaten. The owner that beat him could of worn a certain coglone. The same coglone could of triggered the dog to bite that man. Next time when company comes, place the dog elsewhere, be glad tht you didnt get sewed. Plus dont leave the dog in a space that is small....thy feel threaten already, they will attack if they get cornered.

Find out the dogs backround FAST. If it was a fighting dog or something tramatic happened this dog may be human aggresive. If it was a fighting dog there is probably nothing you can do but give it up or risk this happening again. If it was tramatized it may need LOTS of work to get over this. It may have only acted *good* because it was scared. Or this person may have looked like the person that it was tramatized by. Find out it's backround.

You don't know what has happened in this dog's life to make it afraid. The best thing to do is to take the dog to training. It is the best way to teach your dog appropriate behavior, and it helps your dog learn to trust you, because he or she will feel safer when she understands what you expect. This actually makes the dog feel safer and less aggressive.
Do not give up on your dog. It needs you to give it a second chance.

Just adopted shelter dog can be under lots of stress. Poker night with many new people around hasn't helped.
Perhaps it wasn't that much of your dog's fault.
Hope all will turn for better, and good luck!!
