English is not, and has never been, the OFFICIAL language of the US. It's just the language most of us speak.
The answering machine gives you a choice of languages because there are people in the US who speak other languages, and whoever it is you're calling doesn't want to just write off their business. If -you- were in business you'd probably think the same way.
You know what? If you don't push -anything- you usually get English anyway. So get over it.

Tell it to the US government and those government facilities that have them in Spanish. Tell US government that there's only 1 official language in use: English. It is official because: 30 out of 50 states has made English the official state language. I hate that they only have most publications in Spanish in welfare offices where the staff will, when you ask, tell you, there's 14 different languages[Chinese is 1 language, not 2: Cantonese & Mandarin use the same written language!] used in translations. But only SPANISH is seen everywhere!!!
And ATMs would have English and Spanish only. Rarely do they really have more than these 2 languages.
Tell the government that it is unfair to those who doesn't speak Spanish!!!

The United States has no official language as a nation, although many states have passes legislation mandating English as the official language of the state.

Boy, just blame the phone makers!
I know. Send them a letter asking for ONE KEY phones! Yeah! you would just have the 1. that way you'd hear "push one for English", and as no other key would exist, there would be no chance to mantion any other language.

Are you trying to say English should be automatic and Spanish an option? If so, I think mostly it is. It should be.

because our damn government doesn't have the brains and the courts don't have the guts to make English the United State's official language.
