Just go to the fishing site and observe. See what others are doing, then next time go back there and do the same. If you ask questions to someone in the process of fishing and catching nothing, there's a chance you won't get a straight answer, Wait until that person catches a fish, then that person will be happy to talk about how he did it. Yet best is to just watch and learn.

To help you get started catching those fish take a look at LuresForFree.com

They have some great lures for catching everything from snapper to snook.

As far as what to eat, what region are you in? Florida Sportsman puts out a great book that is very detailed.

If you are in Texas/Louisiana area then you should read the advisories on fish consumption at:
http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/fish/consumption_bans/

Plus a lot of other useful fishing, boating and hunting info are there to view as well.
For other areas consult your States DNR(Dept. of Natural Resources) website.
Enjoy!
