I just saw Freedom Writers Diary. It looks like a pretty tough place, where there are a long gangs and that type of thing.
My nephew is getting married there off the ocean in the spring. Is it a safe place to stay to go to the wedding?????

Long Beach is great and I love living there. I'm 2 blocks from the beach and within walking distance to bars, restaurants and shopping. I feel safe at night and even take walks after midnight with a friend and we feel safe.
If you stay close to the ocean you will see some great old houses and apartment buildings.
North Long Beach on the other hand is bad, but you won't be anywhere near there. LB is a large city, over 450,000 people live here and it covers over 50 square miles.

It's cool here and I think you will enjoy your stay. It's the most diverse city in the US so I'm sure you will find something you like here.
P.S. DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON TV AND IN THE MOVIES

Long Beach, Cal. is a very nice city. Just like in any other big city there are areas that are not very nice. I am sure your nephew chose a nice place to get married. The area around the ocean is beautiful. Have a great time.

don't let the movie scare you away. Long Beach is a very large, spread-out city and there are pockets of less desireable neighborhoods, but for the most part it's a relatively nice environment. Besides, all of the areas along the coast are beautiful and safe. No need to worry.

As your other answer's said its just like any other city. good neighborhoods and bad. It is as safe as any where else in the country and safer than many. Lots of great hotels in town but if you can stay at the Queen Mary it's a kick. Also there are good hotels downtown and in the Belmont shore area which is one of the nicer areas of LB. Don't worry. Like most movies there is a lot of drama and hype involved. You will have a great time and your safety is pretty much gauranteed.

There are bad parts of Long Beach and there are the good parts. The good parts are actually very nice and there are no gangs are anything like that. Long Beach used to be a gang infested city, but now it is generally safe depending on where you are in Long Beach.

If you want to be able to go on a more flexible schedule than Allegiant Air offers, Jetblue has direct service to Long Beach from Sacramento. Additionally, both LAX & Orange County airport (SNA) are very close to Long Beach and out of Sacramento you would be able to fly multiple airlines including southwest.

I am from Compton. Long Beach is a glamorous city. Like in Compton, there are ugly places and very very nice parts. Downtown LB is very beautiful.

Long Beach is a great place, dont judge it by the movie. You really do have some beautiful places there, but dont get me wrong, you do have some bad areas but shoot....what city doesn't now days...

Stay out of North Long Beach and anywhere near PCH & MLK Blvd. You should be fine!
