I have answered a question similar to this before so I will just post that same response. This is at least a scientific attempt to explain it. This is a rather crazy theory, but if you are open minded, it may make you think.
There is one theory, but it is rather off the wall. I am sure most people would dismiss it as nonsense. However, here I go. It is called parthenogenesis. This has been seen in lizards. Here is a link to a story of a lizard "virgin birth."

I stumbled across this blog as well.

Basically, if this were true, then Jesus would have been a hermaphrodite, and he would not have been able to produce his own children. It is thought by some he had children and by others he did not.
Another interesting story is this one where female mice were able to reproduce without a male mouse.

These theories are rather out there, but maybe we are just not intelligent enough to question their validity.
Furthermore, I don't understand why, following the above reasoning, this would lead to Jesus being born a he and not a she because from what these links conclude is that Jesus would have been a she. But once again God works in mysterious ways. It goes back to our intelligence. Maybe we just cannot explain it now. These are good stepping stones for us to learn scientifically the question you proposed. Hopefully in our lifetime we will see a valid scientific argument to answer the question you proposed. Great question.

I can't make you believe in things you don't understand or know about. Have you ever believed in anything without actually seeing it personally?
You breathe air but you don't see air. You see the effects of the air like your chest rising , you are still alive, the trees move, etc.
It insults me when you speak of the Virgin Mary, the earthly Mother of Jesus Christ in that way. If you read the bible you might understand.
God had to do something in order for all of us (believers and non-believers) to be able to live eternally in Heaven .
Mary had another son by the usually means but Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and walked on this earth to teach us His Laws, the way, the truth and the light.....that whoever believeth in Him shall have salvation and not perish.
Some things are faith based and Mary the Virgin Mother of Christ (who is God) certainly deserves honor and respect.
I wonder if you have ever believed in anything you didn't really see or understand. I pray for you and your soul so that when the "end times" come you will be ready and be able to live eternally with our Lord in Heaven.

the above answers are great! The Word say's we need child like faith, that is a faith that doesn't question the how something happens. The fact is that Mary was a virgin just as the Bible predicted she would and Jesus was born to die for the sins of mankind. The question for you my friend is this; if you were to die today do you know for sure you would go to heaven?? Thank you Jesus I do and so do some of the others who have answered your question with the Truth.

the story of Jesus birth is based on Greek understanding conception the Greek believe that if a woman sleep with more then one man the seed of the man mix in the woman, and the child can have more then one father. this is how so many mythological heroes could have both a mortal parent and a divine godly parent and a king could claim to be both the son of ZEUS and the previous king the christian had a problem with sexuality i guess as a negative reaction of the open sexuality of the Romans so in their case the son of their sky father had no mortal father

The Virgin birth of Jesus was without sexual behavior before marriage. Sex before marriage in the days of Mary was forbidden!
The Virgin birth is a miracle of Yahweh.

It's called Divine intervention. It's outside our norm of how things operate. I don't blame you for struggling with this. It is a matter of faith, and unless one has that, it just won't fly with them.
Btw, the Immaculate Conception has to do with Mary's conception being without Original Sin, nothing more, and nothing to do with the conception or birth of Christ.

Considering "knocked-up" means pregnant, your question is redundant. If you actually mean getting pregnant or "knocked-up" without having sex, then that is called artificial insemination. It happens now. In Mary's case it was a biblical version of artificial insemination or immaculate conception.

Then you shall die in your sins. God's words not mine.
Mat 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
REPENT AND BE SAVED!

The one who made the entire universe made the baby. A pretty small feat considering the complexity of the universe.
