Not an expert but I'd look for a 25-35 lb. spayed female. I've found that spayed females tend to take out their maternal instincts on the people around them.
The size is a practical matter considering that the baby will grow up with the dog.

A good family dog to have is a boxer. Whether a boy or girl. They are big family dogs, even the males can be very maternal. But its all about a personal choice. Just remember, you need a very calm dog, and it will take some work to get there.

The "Nanny Dog", an American Pit Bull Terrier. I have seen mine lay on the floor, for over an hour, with my grandson when he was a month old. He is a year old now and the Pit will go to him and put her head in his hand and let him play with her ears while she licks his toes.
She loves everyone that comes to the house, she does not know what a strange is.
The Pit used to be the most popular family dog in the country.

no offense to you but the last thing your gonna want is a dog-trust me you'll have plenty to take care of without worrying about a new dog too.maybe you should wait until after the baby comes and life has settled a little-then get a Lab-best dog ever around children and people in general.

The best kind of "family dog" is the lab. They have patience,
they are calm, and they are loving. A German Shepard, is also a good "family dog" they are protective, and on alert at all times.

A dachshund (doxon). They a are the sweetest dogs in the world if you buy them from puppies. We have a doxon, a pit bull, and a rat terrier. They are very good choices if you have the right amount of time.

a puppy, so that the two can grow up together, you won't have to worry about the baby if the dog is around.
labs are good family dogs, medium sized. german shepherds are great dogs, but may be a little bigger than you are wanting.

I have two pugs and when we first got them we wanted to make sure that they were good with kids so we read pug books and they all said that pugs are great with kids if the kid doesn't tease or hurt them. Also my two pugs are great with kids of all ages.
