I shout and sing to the Lord in worship services, I speak in tongues when I am in quiet prayer.

I am not a pentecostal but I do know that the Bible says there are gifts of the spirit. HOWEVER, those gifts are to be used for the edification of the body of Christ and not to push others away because of how intense it can get. Speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit and should only be used with the help of a translator. There are rules to this, you just have to be mindful. Also, praying on street corners, etc. was what Jesus was talking about because the Sadduccees and Pharisees would roll out their prayers and stop traffic just so everyone would see them. It is a different kind of thing than what we see today. (Actually, the kind of prayer the muslims do - out in the open, and pridefully - that is the kind Jesus says not to do.) It is because of the Ephesians verse that we are not to boast of our own works but it is a gift of faith given by God.

Hey, I think this is a good question and a fair one to be asked. I think that speaking in toungues has poorly been mistaken for praying in the spirit. I do both but as you have said it is usually so quiet that you would have to be siting next to me to hear. In praising God I sing (quite loudly I suppose) and occasionally even dance a little bit. I have been in intercessory prayer with a group of other christians where we are passionately calling out to God for someone or something and, in those ocassions it did get loud! As far as I know though If your speaking in tounges you should look for a interpretation from another at the service. I don't think that you are required to do all your praying in a quiet thoughtful manner but you do need to examine yourself and ask what your purpose in your exuberance is. God comes to all of us in differant ways. Some of us find our comfort and connection in a prayer that was beautifully writen hundreds of years ago recited in a great cathedral and others dance and sing and get a little "louder". I don't think any of us are more correct in our ways of worshiping God because God is connecting to us in the way he created us! That is one thing I find so great about God, He lets the jews continue to practise thier law that has become the way they show him praise and he tells the gentiles to "not get caught up in the law".

Mark 16:17
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
All this is done during Praise & Worship
The Bible talks of how God loves to be praised & worshiped.
The Bible specifically says to make a joyful noise unto the Lord.
Apotolilcs and Pentecostals usually have prayer closets or a set place such as a prayer closet to pray.

I have attended Pentecostal Services and I have spoken in tongues. Speaking in tongues is a gift of God and is a sign to the unbeliever. If the Holy Spirit comes upon someone in gives them the utterance, then they must obey God. When I spoke in tongues it was to praise God. There is a dynamic that Pentecostals understand, and that is when praises go up, blessings come down. Whether someone is praying to God in an unknown tongue or praising God in an unknown tongue, scripture is being fulfilled. "You shall receive power when the Holy Ghost comes upon you." I was scared and reluctant at receiving this gift at first, because I was raised in a United Methodist Church, and God will not give this gift if you fear it. But once you give up your preconceived notions about this gift, then God can bless you with this gift, and begin to work in your life.
Don't knock this gift, because it is a very powerful manifestation of God's power.

Pentecost is found in Acts Chapter 2 and so were the scoffers! The Apostles were and are Apostolic by reason of spreading the Gospel or Good News!
Please read Psalm 150, then turn over to 1st Corinthians 14 it is to be done decently and in order. It is also acceptable to pray in private or in your closet.Matthew 9 and Acts Chapters 1 and 2! Was the very First Pentecost and they were not Quiet about the fulfilment of Scripture spoken of in Joel 2:28 and Please don't foret that either!

I think they pray the same way you do . I believe it a kind of praise.and thanksgiving. If you read you bible carefully it says the praise of the saints will be like rivers of water that's loud.I think God just wants us to be sincere in our prayers and praises. We do not want the stones to cry out.

No stone will take my place!
Luke 19:37-40
37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"
40"I tell you," he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."
