anything by Scott Cunningham are all great places to start.
Be careful what you read, a lot of it is pure crap. Find someone to have an open dialog if you can, that has been an absolute savior for me.
The more you read, the more you realize what is crap though. Good luck on your path.

Also you have to realize that the Devil is a Christian creation. We do not believe he even exists.

edit: ok I re read and I am seeing this two views.
If you want to know the HISTORY of all those things, you need to go to the library and start reading. You're talking about since the dawn of time. There is not ONE book that has that.

i suggest you read the Satanic Bible. I know you might be a little reserved as to reading something with that title however i assure you that it wont make you start worshipping devils, sacrificing children or howling at the moon. This stuff is all negative publicity that satanism has because of lack of knowledge regarding it.
The book is very interesting and I think that it will suit your views fairly well. Sinse you dont beleive in the devil either, you might be interested to know that satan is used only as a metaphor for other things. I highly recomend this book for you and anyone else.

That quite a lot that you have asked. Its not easy reading but look at the ccel.org website. It provides early Christian documents. while it is laborious reading through the council of Nicea transcripts they helped me to realize that most of modern Christianity doctrines were voted on there. The doctrines that got the most votes were accepted as the official doctrines. all the rest where from then on considered heresies and all documents that were associated with them were sought out and destroyed.
Most Christians feel that somehow these men were inspired to select the doctrines that they did. From my reading of the transcripts it doesn't come across that they were inspired. it comes across that each had there own aggended that they were fighting to get accepted.
