Legend has it that the 3d finger has the vein that leads directly to the heart. Hence, the reason that particular finger is chosen. However, not all cultures subscribe to this. Some culture wear the wedding band on a different finger, on a different hand or dispense with the ring altogether. An example of the last? Seventh Day Adventists...many of the older couples do not wear wedding bands.

Yes, because in Germany, where I grew up, wedding bands are worn on the third finger of the right hand. (The third finger is actually called 'Ringfinger' in German.)
I think the third finger is most frequently chosen for jewelery, because it is not that much used for work as the thumb and the first and second finger, so that the ring doesn't get tangled up that much, and it's better protected than the pinky. I assume, the left hand was initially chosen for a similarly practical reason: Most people prefer their right hand for work. (Since I wanted to wear my wedding band on the right hand, according to German custom, I asked my fiance not to give me a diamond so I wouldn't get into trouble with the ring while gardening.)

The Chinese believe that the fourth finger on the left hand is directly connected to the heart (symbolic of love). I guess the tradition and belief just traveled to different countries and became the "norm". In Germany, when a couple is engaged they BOTH wear a simple gold band on the fourth finger of the RIGHT hand and then switch to the left.

1. Its considered the "magic" or "healing" finger in many ancient religions. Ex. It was Buddah's healing finger!
2. Western belief is that there is a major vein on that finger leading directly to the heart.........ahhhhhh so romantic.
3. For Christians, it is believe to represent teh "trinity"......god, father, and holy spririt, ect.
4. And in many foreign countries they dont even use the left hand!!!!!!!
So I would assume now u only have 3 options to pick from, unless u are a forienger.

There is an artery that goes directly from the heart and feeds off into the left ring-finger. Therefore, a wedding ring is always worn on the finger "connected to the heart".

The reason for the rings being placed on this finger stems from the Egyptian belief that the ring finger follows the vena amoris - the vein of love that runs directly to the heart

its not worn on the 3rd finger - it's the 4th.. your 3rd finger would be the middle finger.. i have never seen anyone flip the bird with a wedding band on it. as for why it's on the 4TH.. it is believed that the artery leads to the heart. many cultures believed it to be a "magical" finger.

I heard it has something to do w/the fact that it's closer to our heart on the left hand. Plus that finger is called the "ring finger" so it's appropriate to wear it on that one!
