In answer to the first part - I think it is a matter of cost and of personal preference. Some people shudder at the thought of being buried while others hate the thought of being cremated.
As for my choice, I pick cremated. I want my ashes to be scattered on my grandfather's land. I grew up there and the thought of becoming part of the land that I love so much is very appealing. I want my children to be able to walk the land - the places I love so much (the pond where grandpa took me fishing as a child, the camping spot where I spent so much time with my friends, the hill top where I can see the entire area) and feel my presence.

I wish to be cremated simply because I can't stand the thought of being buried. I've always suffered claustrophobia. I realize that I will be dead, yet still, this bothers me.
I've requested that my children take my cremains to my ancestral home in Newry, Northern Ireland. While there, they are to enjoy a week on me (there is money set aside for the trip), and before returning home I want my ashes tossed into the sea.
There are many different reasons for choosing cremation, from what I've just described to saving land space, or less expense for the family. It's really just a matter of personal preference.

Some people choose to be cremated because its probably cheaper, and they don't want their bodies to rot in a grave
Some people want to be buried because it the traditional way to go, there is some religious reasons to; when your buried and if jesus returns he will bring you back to life or something like that.
I would like to be cremated, its cheaper I hear.
If I am going to go I don't want to leave my family with a big bill.

I think it boils down to personal choice with the factors being economics, religion and personal preference. For example, my mother who is christian is appalled that I wish to be cremated and vowed not to let that happen if I go before her. So, to protect my desires, I had my wishes put into my Will.
Cremation is my preference because I work with chemicals - especially formaldehyde which is one of the chemicals used in embalming - and I see how nasty and destructive an agent it is. It will pollute the earth once a vault and casket go and the earth will be poisoned - unusable for human life. The land is better used to support the living.

I would like to be cremated and have my ashes scattered in the ocean simply not to put any burden on my children when it comes to taking care of my grave. I am a Christian and believe cremation is not an obstacle to resurrection.

Give all parts to those in need. Cremate the rest. It's only a tent. What counts is eternal and present with the Lord.

I prefer to be cremated. I do not want to spend all that money for a burial. I told my kids when I die to take me out to the forest and dump me, not to spend a cent on my funeral. I think it is robbery what they charge. How do senior citizens on small incomes afford to bury their loved ones? They should not have to spend any of their savings.

I want to be cremated and have my ashes buried, and then have a tree planted over my ashes with a little memorial thing on the tree.

I want to be cremated, because I don't want to decompose, don't want to be an expensive burden on my family, and I figure that by the time I die, most people will be since land is at a premium.

I have no problem with either because I'm not going to be in there! I would rather be cremated.
