There are many reasons why...MONEY, GREED, AND THE NEED FOR POWER
1st- we are in the age of technology. We are becoming accustomed to the new simplicity of life. Our goals have slowly changed from "I'm going to make a difference in the world and change history" to "I'm gonna get that new i-phone before it's out of style in 6 months." Hint-Keeping people from fighting for what they believe in is allowing Power to be gained alot easier for the ones who seeks it.
2nd- the Media. It is a tool for the Greedy and very much responsible for this change. With it's mass advertisements, it pushes onto us what we don't really need while at the same time, reprogramming us to believe we're not socially acceptable without these things. It has stategically turned our attention from the important things in life while at the same time, making billions of dollars off of our ignorance. Hint-You are helping the one who will steal your soul.
3rd-the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT...Are you freaking crazy!! Basically this has made our students as smart as the dumbest ones! Enough said on this one! Hint-Blindfolding keeps their Victims ignorant to the "Plan".
If you can learn to put everything together, you will see the path of the next generation of people and those that follow. Slavery exists, it's not just in the history books! There is a reason for these events, Open your Eyes people!

Get this. In Poland, the best impression we make is when Poles go over to America and get questions like:
"Poland? You're from Poland? Wow, where's that? Isn't it in Africa?"
"Poland? Wow! Do you really have polar bears in the streets?"
"Poland? Wo! That's great! Where's, wait, what was that again? Oh yeah, Poland!"
OK, I realize knowing where Poland is on a map is not the definitive mark of intelligence (as many people in Poland seem somehow to think) but come on! What's the deal? Isn't anybody curious about the world at all?
That's the thing for me. When I was a kid, I was curious. So I looked at things like maps from time to time to figure out what was where. I didn't study it in school, I wasn't crazy about geography (I was crazy about dinosaurs) but it was interesting! Europe, the countries, the main cities... My Mom helped instill that in me, and for the life of me I can't figure out why people don't find things like that interesting
Like you see a globe or a map, and there's a country you've heard of, and next to it is a country you've never heard of with a long crazy name. Is it not even slightly interesting what that country is? Is it not natural to find out something about it? I don't know, for me it is!

Our age does not hold the patent on stupidity. However, I do understand the point you are making. It seems that it is proliferating at a much faster rate than in previous generations. One of the reasons for this is the fact that so many are wise in their own eyes.(Proverbs 26:12, 1Corinthians 3:19) The Bible's words are true "The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped.
Since they have rejected the word of the LORD,
what kind of wisdom do they have?" Jeremiah 8:9 (NIV)

This is not as new as you might suppose. One issue is that there is so much more to learn nowadays than there used to be, and the sheer volume can be intimidating. A consequence of this is that home schooling above the junior high level is inadvisable: unless you are an expert in English, physics, chemistry, mathematics, foreign languages, history, civics, and mechanical arts, you need to relegate instruction to experts: you cannot teach what you do not know.

It's called worrying about a kid growing up rich and with the right religion and doing sports and stuff-- no one wants a non-sporty kid that has a brain and can live life for themselves.
I grew up with an artist as a mother. I'm a writer, I paint and draw, and by the time I was in fifth grade I was reading post-college material. I'm lucky my mom taught me to think-- not how to force myself into every sport for glory and ignore education.
Blame the parents forcing kids into religion that teaches intolerance and ignorance, and blame parents teaching their girls to find rich men instead of smart ones.
By the way, I'm liberal and Agnostic. We're not screwing up the country, the people with low education standards and high religious standard are. They're just making generations of consumers that will swallow every belief without thinking about it and buy everything that is a fad.

I don't know about other countries, but stupidity has been a long time in the making in America, in part due to the theism that runs rampant in the politics that ultimately control the country. Why bother learning when one can just say such-and-such is the providence of a god?
There is also the matter of consumerism. It is in the interest of corporations to maintain a dumb populace so as to sell products. Take for example the SUV, which gets poor gas mileage (which is inexcusable given auto advancements) and handles poorly in emergency situations but gives the PERCEPTION that it is safe because it is big.
Citizens are to blame as well, for they think as long as they are comfortable and that food procurement is easy, what need is there for intelligence?
These three factors have helped develop the situation we are in.

You're preaching to the choir, Judy E.T. It breaks my heart to watch the rapid rise of illiteracy in America, along with all the other symptoms of post-modernism. I blame fundamentalism, because it promotes the false idea that belief is a substitute for knowledge. The asinine assertions of fundamentalists seek to deliberately undermine America's science teachers. The fact that our President actually believes the unfounded superstitions of our ancient ancestors harms America in countless ways and causes our allies to mistrust us (as it should). Why should America's students even bother to try when our leader is living proof that willful ignorance and popular superstition will get one further than serious study and scientific truth?

I assumed we were well into that age long ago. Many are content with sleep, and many don't question thought and perception in this age. But as we learn in time, the depth and substance of true thought does not come from scholastic achievements. In a nutshell, stupidity is probably a natural outcome of competitive markets, impacting the way (self-hypnotized) adults make decisions.

Why are we entering an age of sheer stupidity?
Because the new religion-drug for the masses is politics, big money and blindly following ancient hatreds in the name of worshiping blind stupid traditions.
Do yourself a favor - learn to think for yourself, look for truth. Be a seeker of truth and when you discover truth, hold to it and learn from it. Always be curious about what is and what isn't truth and what can be proven!
