Smile. A smile can go such a long way. It can make people relax around you, and you will feel more comfortable. So when you are introduced to people, be sure to smile.
Laugh. Try not to be afraid to laugh at a funny joke (if you find it funny). Again, it helps you relax and loosen up.
Pay attention to names and faces. When people introduce themselves, they are happy when you remember their names. If that's hard, then no problem. Tell them "I'm sorry, but I met so many people I can't keep up with their names. Could you tell me yours again?"
If someone asks you to go to lunch, accept the invitation. Even if you discover that you can't stand them, it's a way to get to know people.
Hope this helps. I just started a new job, and I took this advice. It worked really well for me.

I'm a teacher and I promise you that you won't be the only new student at that school. Almost all of them are fearful on the 1st day although they wouldn't all admit it!It may be a new school to you but 4 them they'll have new teachers, new desks, books, supplies, rules, etc.Usually shy children are really good at knowing which kids seem nice. (I was VERY shy when I was younger...Now I'm not shy at all because talking gets easier as you grow up).Try to find a nice child and maybe you could even bring some really yummy treat for snack recess. You could go up to the nice kids and ask them if they'd like 1.They will probably say, "Yes," but if they don't it just means they're not hungry for that food. Don't you feel that way sometimes? It won't mean they don't like you. If you change your mind and decide not to do it when you're out at recess that's no big deal. I really think you should though. The other students will be really happy if you talk to them...Aren't you always happy if someone talks to you?Ask your gardians 4 some things you may say..."What's your name?" or "What did you do over the summer?" Be ready to tell them some things u did also."Do you like our new class?" "Do you ever play _ _ _ _(name a game)?" "I love that game."Maybe your parents can read you some reasons why shy people are soooo fabulous!!! There are books on shyness. I bet you're VERY creative and artistic! I also bet You've VERY thoughful and sweet! Those are some of the reasons shy people are so great! Get back 2 me if u want and tell me how it goes. Guess what...Even teachers get a little nervous about the 1st day because I am! Just try to realize that on the 2nd day you'll be familiar with everything and the other good news is that we plan especially fun things in the beginning of the year!

The best thing you can do is focus on your studies and pay attention in school. Eventually, your confidence level will build, until it gets to the point where you will be comfortable with meeting new people.

i would suggest a sports team.. you can build friendships by bonding with your team and supporting your teammates.. they will support you too. if you're skilled, people will respect you for that.

in class you'll find ways to interact on people one on one (lab partners, group projects).. then they can introduce you to friends and you can build a social circle.
