I know what you're thinking..."this doesn't belong in the Parenting section of Yahoo Answers." But here's what I am asking...

As a parent, do the "High School Musical" movies give you hope about the next generation?

I know many of you probably hate these movies, but I watched them (as a 36 year old woman who is not particularly interested in Disney teen movies) to see what is so popular about it with this generation. What I liked was that it is so squeaky clean. There's nothing sexual about the content and even the "big moment" was whether or not the 2 lead characters finally get to kiss.

For me, it was a relief. The next generation isn't all into hard core rap and dressing like/acting like the troubled Hollywood starlets/singers (like Brittany Spears, Lindsay Lohan, etc). I worry about it now that I'm a parent.

How do you feel about it?
(this is really a question for parents... I know kids & teens may want to jump in)

Neeilea, I think you misunderstood what I am said about "High School Musical." Of course it is a Hollywood movie that is fantasy. My point is that it is nice to see that young people (probably more pre-teen than older teens) like a movie that is sweet and clean. With all of the raunchier movies, reality tv, videos and music available, I am pleasantly surprised that this generation likes it.

One more note...you're 18. Please don't call me "honey"...it's condescending.

I do understand what you're saying. I saw the movie for a couple minutes at my cousins house and her 11yr daughter likes it. It's nice to see that a lot of younger kids into their pre-teens are interested in a movie that doesn't have any sexual references, bad language and clean cut with dancing and singing.
Personally, it doesn't make me feel any different about the next gerneration. This is something that's popular at the moment. Like Pokemon and the Spice Girls were only 9-10yrs ago. I remember seeing tons of kids liking both of those, neither of which sent out a horrible messege. I think kids are growing up too fast but I think every parent feels that way. I'm sure my mom did when I was younger. My oldest son is going into the 4th grade and some of the girls in his class come to school in full make up, extremely short shorts (i mean I have underwear longer than that) etc. What's the rush to grow up so fast? I'm sure when the next generation gets into their late teens, early twenties, there will be another Lindsay Lohan, Brittany Spears etc and another group of teenagers like those on the Disney channel that are the exact opposite.
Best wishes =]

Ok well as a parent I don't like rap but I remember being teen and remembering listening to the "hip" music which I know bothered my parents. As much as I hate the rap music my teens listen too I let them play it because I know it is what my parents did for me. Yes I am glad that teens are now thinking of HSM as "hip" because it has a much more postive message than Lip Gloss, Umbrella, and This Is Why I'm Hot. Hope I answered this question.

Im 17,
I have two little sisters and a brother.
My two sisters are 11 and 7, They really hate that movie even my 11 year old sister called it "gay". Even though they arent into Brittany Spears and Lindsay they still don't enjoy movies like that and find them rather boring. I myself find them extremly cheezy and fake, I dont see what the big fuss is about.

i think these are the type of movies that children should be watching because then it gives them a good influence other than all those MTV reality shows, where people lie to their best friends and cheat on eachother and dress the way they do. expecially with all the fighting and name calling.
