i would say live bait : the fish smell it, get better results ect
but its always good to have a couple of fake bait in your fishing kit. They re tougher last longer. you can fish for a whole day with a fake worm.
it also depends what your fishing. Worms¨(live or fake) work to catch perch, bass, sun fish, northern pike ect...
but my bet is still on live bait.
to make your bait stay on the top it depends if your casting(throwing your line in the water and realing it back right away.)
then you dont need a bobber(little ball that make your line float.)
OR
throwing your line in the water until you have bites then a bobber is needed. These bobbers do not cost much but i concider big ones(tennis ball size).
HOPE THIS HELPS

If your a starter, i would suggest using a "bobber", thats the thing that helps your bait stay on top, as you say. But thats not really its purpose, its to see when you got a catch. Then the red part will go underwater, and you will know you caught something. This trains you to know how it feels when a fish bites it and you dont have a bobber. Then after a while you will just know you got a fish without looking, it will just be an instinctive feeling by the tug of the bait line. I also suggest you use live worms. They move around more, and the fish will see it quicker. With fake bait, they dont move, so it takes the fish a while to realize its there. Happy Fishing :)

Live bait out beats any plastic baits anytime of the year. How ever they are one time use only. If you want something to reuse get a Pack of Soft plastic Grubs 3", hard plastic bait or a wire bait or balsa wood bait.
My Favorites:
Minnows
Black Grub
Rattle Trap- Threadfin Shad
Chartruese and White Spinnerbait
Poe's RC1

Its a personal preference. I use mostly live baits. Under many cicumstances however, a plastic bait works better. In some tournaments they require that you use artificial baits only.

I like live bait. If you're fishing where your tackle is likely to get tangled in weeds (fresh water) or oyster beds (salt water), you might want to use a "bobber". It won't keep you bait on top of the water, but it will keep it from going to the bottom.
BTW, everyone who fishes will have a different opinion. :)

depends what youre going for. For say bass a night crawler on a bobber will work while and is a good general starting point for many fish until you become a little more experienced. There are so many varibles on what will work well where and when just find a pond with some fish in it. Start with worms and shiners move up to spinners jiggers and texas rigs as you get know more

It's a matter of preference really. I prefer to use artificial bait for the most part.
And no,you don't need a bobber.Again,it's a personal choice.
